I need help please. I am a retired old bloke wanting to save a few bucks and change the diff oil in my 2003 BA Fairmont but not sure how or what oil to use. I do my own engine oil changes and so I can use a spanner, but it looks a lot different under there from the last time I did something like this on an XF S Pack some 15 years ago. Any help welcome. have you got a hoist? it's a hell of alot easier on a hoist

No. I don't have a hoist. But I know what you mean. I must have been a lot thinner last time I did this sort of thing.

now if i remember correctly there is a drain plug at the base of the diff and a fill plug on the drivers side of the diff. you need a oil hand pump with like a 90 degree bent pipe or a flexi pipe to fill it

Make sure you have a 1/2 ratchet with a 30 or 32 mm socket (cant remember which) otherwise it's pretty hard to undo the filler plug.

Wild EB is right. You refill the diff from the top by pumping the oil in. It is very awkward to do without the right gear and when i did my BA T i had to use an additive as well from Ford. You might need it too so double check. btw i got mine serviced at an auto tranny place.

I use a ratchet cos I dont have a spanner big enough. Thats all.

OK you win Tomsford! You're much older. But, when you have young people 30 plus years younger than you, telling you how things are done, then you've got to admit you're no spring chicken anymore. But hey, I reckon it's just great that the knowledge gets shared around. As for my diff, its starting to sound like I should have got the guy that just rebuilt my tranmission to do it for me.

not that hard at all mate.
jack car up and put on stands. remove filler then drain plug. drain old oil. refit drain plug. using a small hand pump you should be able to buy from most autopart stores, pump new oil in. refit filler plug. remove stands and lower car back down. as for which oil to use you could simply give ford a call and ask which oil/additives they recommend. cheers |

make sure it's on four jack stands so it's level or it won't drain all of it out
