Hey all, I have just had my new diff dropped off, need to know what to look for to find out the condition its in.

So apparently, its out of a Fairmont donor vehicle, and supposedly it is Limited Slip.
How do I tell if its LSD, I want to make sure I didnt pay the extra just to be ripped off.

Is there anything else I can do to check it out, like how will I know if its going to work, Do I need to reco it etc.
Is there any way I can find out the gear ratio without too much trouble?

Diff is currently still unnatached from the car so Its a perfect time to have a look over it without too much trouble, I can easily open it to look inside if i Need to.

Should have a metal tag on the diff housing with LSD stamped one it. Or raise rear wheels off the ground and out of gear spin one wheel and if the other spins its a lsd. If its a lsd and only one wheel spins diff needs rebuilding.

Part Numbers, as stamped on the diff.

On the FRONT Housing, as in where the drivetrain attaches is stamped 0578-026908 F3 BTR S

And on the REAR Diff Housing, Is stamped 0578-038975 E 3M

Any clues ??

As said above, spin one wheel and look at what direction the other wheel spins in. If they both spin the same, its a LSD, if they spin opposite, its an open wheeler.

If its an LSD, clamp up one axle then use a torque wrench to estimate the force required to break the clutches by turning the other axle. That will give you an indication of condition.

it was rare for a fairmont to lsd as it was an option
your best is a fairmont ghia diff or a xr diff - 3.45 lsd

OK, I got my new diff today, but im still not sure how to diagnose...

This diff actually has one of those stickers that says "THIS STICKER IS NOT TO BE REMOVED", the last diff i got from these guys didnt even have that...

But anyway, Part numbers from the sticker:

OLD DIFF : 96DA-4005-CC 6CC
NEW DIFF: 94DA-4005-WB 4WB

The new diff is apparently out of an EL Fairlane, and supposedly is LSD...
Altho it doesnt have LSD stamped on it anywhere, It has a big metal tag on the filler hole that says "HIGH PERFORMANCE LUBRICANTS ONLY", which leads me to believe it needs LSD fluid, and therefore should be LSD...
However with the diff sitting off the ground and no resistance on the drive train one wheel spins forwards and one spins backwards...?

Any clues based on part numbers?

When it says " High Performance", they are only a 4 pinion centre single legger diff. The tag needs to say "High Performance LSD".

Unless it's got different gears, it'll be exactly the same.
Where the hell are you buying these from, they must be retarded to deal in car parts and not be able to pick an LS diff?

if the diff is sitting off the ground and one wheel spins forwards and one spins backwards..
it is still a open wheel diff..
you got to watch these wreckers they charge you for a lsd and you get a std diff..

i got done by ford pro at smithfield i asked for a ed 3.45 xr6 diff and they gave me a 3.27 diff out of a eb..
when i said it wasnt a 3.45 ed xr diff they were a** holes and basicaly said tuff and i will have to wait untill they got one in stock..
that was june last year and im still waiting..
so i wont buy nothing from them again and every chance i get i will let people know that they are rip off merchants..
and in the end i got the diff i wanted from macarthur parts plus at narellan.

sorry about the rant it just gets me going when these wreckers rip people off.....................................................

I was at ford pro the other day and they quoted me $400 for a XR 3.45 and in stock. They sold me a 3 bolt fly when I wanted a 6 bolt so I went back and changed it for the right one.

I forund the Leb Boys didn't have a clue but the Auisse whent strait to it no probs.

I know they have the diff because i got my mate to ring them and ask them if they had any xr diffs and they said yes they just didnt like the way i told them they were wrong..
so i rang them every friday for 6 months and after 6 months they told me that the waranty was up and i should f**k off..
so no problem!!
anyway life goes on ..if i see that a** hole at the local shop he will cop it big time..
and now i get my parts from parts plus at narellan these guys are very helpfull and they dont take offence when you point somthing out...

Narellan Parts plus are awesome, they know their stuff. Although they tend to be a little on the expensive side. But atleast you always get what you ask for from them.
