Recently (as of 2 weeks ago), my brake pedal has been increasingly stiff.
It's near impossible to brake efficiently, and it really starting to worry me.
I have to stand on the pedal to stop the car.
Also, when I turn the car off, the pedal moves up by itself, with a fair bit of force.
The fluid is okay, and brake pads/rotors aren't in too bad of condition.

Could it be my brake booster or master cylinder?

Cheers,
#abitworried.

Sounds like a booster.
To test it, pump the brake pedal about 5 times....on the last time, keep the pedal down, now start the car.....if the booster is OK, it will go down,.....IF it doesn't, the booster is stuffed.

Looks like its the booster.
Pumped the pedal 5 times or so, then started the car.
The pedal went down a tiny bit, but not much.

I have a booster out of an EL XR8 at Werrington if you need it.

This - the revs might be higher too & you should be dam careful if/when your taking it to get fixed.

If it is a cracked braked booster and you need to drive it to a mechanic or something, you can do a quick temporary fix. Get some good duct tape or better yet, those race tapes (ones with fibres in them...300 mile tape?) and tape up the crack. This will temporarily ease the brake pedal and still give you easier braking than a fully leaking crack. I did this to get to the wreckers...it actually worked fine for a day or so before I could swap it over...but in no way should you drive it hard. If it's race tape, it should withstand the head quite well.

Do the above at your own discretion...I advise you to clean the brake booster before you put any tape over it...hate for the tape to fall off half way through your trip.

Thing is, it still pulls up quite well during use.

I drove down a quiet, yet quite steep hill, and it pulled me up well enough for me to be confident in driving it long distances.

I just take AMPLE time to pull up, etc.

Im not saying its a small problem, but it doesnt seem to be as bad as you guys make it out to be?
Not sure what's going on....

Update:
Yep, she's cracked.
Image
I've taped it up as Phongus has said, but will get it fixed as soon as possible.

Looks like my tax return will be going into this, rather than new rotors/pads.

Thanks for the help guys, really appreciate it.

Thought it might be a bit more expensive?
I was thinking of getting a new one. Not worth it?
