Hi Guys i have a knocking noise from Diff area. its a BA XR6 ute
now Ford have told me its the brake pads causing the nocking , but i'm not sure now im getting the noise when i'm slowing down (on or off the brakes). starts to knock at about 40-50km/p down to zero the discs are not warped at all i even took old discs off and even put new ones on just to make sure (upgraded to slotted and drilled dba) i havent tried new pads yet (gen ford ones in atm and the ute is 4.5 years old with 43000km on clock) as i'm trying to find out what pads work best with the new discs  i have taken it back to ford a few times now and they say nothing is wrong with the diff (even tho it ran without friction modifier for the 1st 22000km before they put it in. i had a LSD installed from new its a long story, making noise/they didnt believe me story) has anyone else had this problem cheers |

My EB does a similar thing. Can you feel the knocking through the floor? When it starts knocking if i reach around and feel the floor at the backseat you can definetely feel it knocking through the floor. You can only hear it when your backing off at around 40-50ks. I never discovered what it was. Would be interesting to find out what it is if anyone else has any ideas?

my ed did that, it was the bushes. as for the ute, no idea

Do you recall which bush specifically? I asked the mech to go over all the bushes about 12 months ago and he said they were all pretty good apart from a unrelated pair in the front end that would need replacing soonish.
I just learned to live with it....

Common prob for diff on ba sedans. Bush wears and knocks a little. PITA spot as the spare wheel well gets inthe way. Don't know about the utes. Dad had 3 ba's and after a decent tow (at least once a month) they all started to do it

cheers guys
i wil check the bushes but i dont think that after 43000km that the would be buggered but you never know i might even check the runout on my axle to to see if it is bent but again i have never hit anything to bend it ...just the odd burnout thats all hope fully i find something and will let you know. ive ordered some new brake pads to since ford recond it the OME pads making the noise, moving in the calipers  (getting QFM high performance street HPX pads)

Check tightness of the bolts/nuts for the leaf springs, check spare tyre mounting,.....have you had the diff hanging, then apply Moly grease to the ends of the leaf springs ( lets them slide ), check the exhaust is banging somewhere, check U bolts, check tailshaft bolts, g'box mount bolts/nuts.

This happened once in my XR6 (LSD equipped), it was because I had the spare on the rear which was slightly different size to the other side. Basically started clunking while coasting to a stop, and still clunked after I stopped. Put the correct size tyre back on it and it never did it again.
If your tyres are the same size, id be changing the diff oil. Use Castrol SAF-XA, and dont add any friction modifier. (as the new stuff already has it) Do it yourself, dont get the dealer to do it.

cjh, i will check everthing and see what i find
sturmovik, my tyres are both the same size 245/35r19 . i might change my diff oil to the castrol SAF-XA like you said but only after i have done the other stuff as i would like to know what i have done fixed it before i do the next thing. yeah will change myself easy as |

my problem was the upper control arm bushes were shagged, allowing the diff to rock back and forward witch allowed the tailshaft to nick the body witch was clunking, along with the diff moving, also being so low didnt help one bit lol
