hey guys i was just driving to my uncles house aftera 30 minute drive from shops. i decided to give it a bit of a rev when parking in my uncles house. so i revved her to like 3500RPM and it sounded good and everything, but then i turned off the engine and i see smoke coming from under my bonnet. first i was like wtf? and then i looked under the bonnet to find the smoke was coming out underneath the cat converter. i saw wet or oily patches on it and thought oh okai some oil or something got through. so i drove home and as i reverse into my driveway i can literally see my car dripping liquid onto my drive way. i go out to check and it was red oil.

i dunno if thats the transmission oil leaking or the steering becos i forgot what colour they were and couldn't be bothered checking. how can i fix this leak?

thanks

phong

Power steering switch??

Mounted on the steering rack near exhaust & Cat. These often start leaking.

Trans and ps fluid probably the same colour, lol.

Check the p/s resevoir to see if level has gone down. Same with transmission.

I'm leaning towards trans fluid.
But either way, that ain't cool!
Like 4.9 EF said, check both the levels, and get under there as well to see if you can see a leak out of the trans.

No equipment really needed to check.
I would check it SOONER... NOT later!!!!
If either of those have dumped fluid, you're in a whole lot of s**t.
You'll either kill your box, and get stuck on a freeway with no drive, or have your powersteering die while cornering.
And steering a powersteering equipped car with no powersteering fluid is not much fun...

yeah i know about the steering part. but i think its my transmission. im all lost. and its leeking on the arms of the steering thingy. its got some plastic cover over it so im guessing its steering leaking. but i replaced that like 2 months ago. so it shouldn't be stuffed unless they did a dodgy job.

hopefully i can bring it back there for them to check for me.

thanks

phong

EDIT: i dun think that its the steering, but transmission, since it happened after i revved the car up. so i might have broken an gasket or seal or something. hopefully car doesn't die tonite

im sure i read here somewhere that reving before turning the car of is a terrible thing to do to your engine, cause when you rev it (and im only going by what i remember reading, so it might be a bit sketchy) the oil goes around somewhere or something in the engine, and if you rev it, then turn it off that oil just drips off or something... could this be what was dripping down? maybe touched something hot which would explain the smoke? i dunno if thats right, has anyone else read the same thing?

But consider that the power steering pump is conencted to the engine via the serpentine belt. So... when you rev the s**t out of your engine, the power steering pump also turns quicker and pumps more fluid through the steering rack/lines.

*meh* I hauled the EF around for about 4 weeks without any power steering. It sucks, but it aint that bad.

the same thing happened to me, but i didnt rev the f**k out of it to find it. I could smell something burning and looked under to see fluid burning on my brandnew high flow cat! the switch is very common to go. it allways looks like the oil is comming from the plastic boot covering the rack, i paid $80 to get mine fixed but it is easy as piss to fix!
