Has anyone heard of or seen the new ZF Auto gearbox, possibly a sealed unit, if anything happens you just exchange it out for another?

if they are sealed, how would you do a auto trans service?

frd906n wrote: if they are sealed, how would you do a auto trans service? if they come sealed you would not be able to... that way you drive it untill it dies and you buy a new one from ford or get the original rebuilt. if you look at service schedules from au onwards, there is no trans service listed.. meaning ford do not generally service them, they only open them up to repair or replace the solinoids ect.. |

Ford have been doing "sealed for life, no servicing required" gearboxes since EF2. Hence the no dipstick.
Yes frd906, even your AU gearbox doesnt require servicing and is sealed for life. But that said, both BTR and ZF box's have an inspection hole on the rear drivers side of the box. This is just meant to be to check the level, not so much service the unit. Both transmissions have their fluid dumped from the pan and refilled via that hole. When considering a ZF, just remember you wont get much change out of $800 to $1200 for its first full service, depending on how you go about it and what model car it is... Bet most people dont realise or factor that in when buying their nice new ZF equiped s**t. Specially now since they are the standard auto in the Falcon range. |

i just looked in my book which came with the car and at the bottom of the service list says
Automatic transmission service,

Me, usually every year... Becasue we know fluids like this don't last forever. You might argue Ford removed dipsticks to stop people putting the wrong fluid in. I argue that Ford did it to promote cheaper servicing for fleets. When Mr Fleet comes along wanting to buy 50 Falcons and asks the running costs and Ford goes X,Y and Z and Mr Fleet goes "what about trans", Ford goes "nah mate, sealed for life... Not even a dipstick to check... See". So Ford have just saved Mr Fleet $15,000 per year in servicing, and as they get rid of the cars every 3 years, they dont care! my au manual has the same not need unless leaks are evident or a cop,taxi etc still f**k BS that ford thignk the 8 ltrs or so of oil will last 300,000kms +

Apparently reco'ing them is a fairly difficult experience; because of parts and experience. And the auto shops around my area are just putting the car in the air, put a scrap metal bin under it and fork out the money for a whole new box from Ford, or possibly from the wreckers.
Not sure if it's just because the auto shops around my area aren't too bright and can't figure out how to fix them. |

They are still new to the aussie Auto scene in large numbers, but there are a few people who know them well in every city. And mosts of them know how to easily upgrade them for more power handling.
Rebuilds are as expensive, if not cheaper, than a BTR. A basic rebuild is just a matter of swapping clutch packs as there are no bands to worry about. Gets expensive when you start breaking things like a*** and input shafts. Prices will come down as they become more common and more people understand them. |
