Well I took the AU falcon to Pedder's today to get a 28point inspection check (knowing how scandalous they are) and have been quoted $2000 worth of repairs  . I know that they generally over charge, and fix things which don't need to be fixed. I just wanted a head start on fixing up the problems I've got, So here's the print out they gave me:
Image

The Front Bearings nead replacement, that one I know isn't bs.

They said machining the rear disc would eliminate the high pitch screeching I hear quite frequently when driving.I haven't looked at the rear disc pads yet, so am not too sure about that yet.

They said the Power steering rack and pinion needed replacement because it is knocking? Apparently if, when they move it by hand, hear knocking this is justification for 'time to replace'??? How can I check to see if it needs replacement or not???

They said my shocks need replacing because they are soft?.... (i think thats what he said). They reckon shocks are only good for 100k km. How can I check if they need replacing???

For the bits I need to replace, ie; front bearings, disc pads, maybe shocks?, hopefully not steering rack?. Where is the best place to buy them?
Ebay?
Ford?
Super Cheap (or the likes)?

How much of this stuff could I DIY? or should I get raped by labour fees by taking it to my mechanic?

BTW don't worry, I have no intentions of taking it any where near pedders to get them to fix it.

Thanks in Advance.

Pedders = nitt picking overcharging bull s**t artists. the reason they say 'no bull' is cause they fix EVERYTHING! no matter how insignificantly small

get the shocks and do them yourself (if you think they need doing) its not hard to do if you can get hold of compressors and a trolley jack. if you bounce on the towbar or something and the car takes some time to settle (it sort of twangs a little) they need doing. shocks do wear out.

bearings for the front are easy to do as well. a brake and clutch place will mostly be cheaper as well if they need doing and $130 for pads? wtf! i paid $70 for a set of ultra premium bendix pads

fix all that then if you think theres slap in the rack, MAYBE think of taking it back. the rack will wear out over time. you lock there steering in place with the front wheels raised and pull on the tie rods, if theres play, somethings going on. check the tie rod ENDS first. funny, first time my car was at pedders they said the rack was dieing, second time they didnt mention it.

go to the local bearing place for the front wheel things. and dont forget to get some new grease packed in good b4 you install

Lol, rorted!! Wheel bearings are $25-30 each side, piece of piss to fit, and rear pads 30-50, unless your running EBC greenstuffs... or something....

at $120 a pop those bearings would wanna come with a built in blow job or atleast a smutty poster.

I'm surprised though, the prices on their shocks is relatively little.

As for the rack having a "Knock", check the rack ends, and if OK, peel the driver's side rack boot back and grease the rack, real good, and see if that quieten's it down a bit.

WTF? You got ripped too buddy! Mine cost $20 per side...one hour max to fit!

I'm about to have a serious chat with Pedders Mile End, SA. Less than two years ago, $1300 rack and front end work. Now I have four stuffed 18's, the front end upper control arm bushes squeak and the front end creaks and pops like an old boat.

Don't EVER get Pedders to work on your car.

Mike
