Hi everyone.
I've owned my 64 Compact for 26 years and still love it.
The steering box is absolutley flogged out and I heard some time back that a power steering conversion is reasonably easy.
I have (I believe) a XD box that's pretty good and it seems that the three bolt holes line up perfectly.
The idler arm and pitman arm are completely different, so I am wondering if there is an easy way to get updated arms, linkages, tie rods, etc from another model to go straight in?
A long time ago, I changes the front drums to discs off an XW but had to machine down the XW outer tie rod ends to go into the fairlane linkages and I am running a VH40 remote booster. I would like to update and remove that VH40 to make room for the power steering pump, so will an XW/XY booster/master cylinder go on in place of the original master cylinder?

Also, the 64 steering column is one piece with the steering box. Is there another steering column to use that still looks original that I can maary in with the new steering box?

Thanks...
Vaughn

Probably wont help you much, but my old man with his xp coupe used the full XF setup and the modified it all to suit, so it can be done. Forget what exactly the booster was out of. Think it could have been an old datsun? Mounted the top of the right hand side. Sorry I cant be of more help.

Thanks for responding guys.

I haven't heard of (or tried) Castlemaine Rod Shop. Will do.

Also, not sure of the setup on an XP Falcon. The Fairlanes seem so different but don't really know how much in the steering. I'll check that out, too.

Thanks.

Mate, I was in Hervey Bay in 2001 and saw a black 64 drive by, I tried to fing it to buy it!!
I finally got a 64 from Victoria thats rust free and am doing a full resto.
I am just at the stage of removing the steering box but couldnt figure how to disconnect the colomn and after reading your post it seems they are one unit.
I need to get rid of it and find something else so if you get it figured out can you let me know.

I bought a XY falcon booster and m/cyl which I have seen fitted to a few 63 s. All ya need to do to make it fit is to cut the bracket and take a bit out of it, then weld it back together.
Sounds easy, Im about to find out.

If you send me your email I can send ya some pics.

After talking to a bloke in Victoria with a 64, he told me an xw falcon box has the same bolt holes.
You will need the ram and the pump with a bracket as well.
The xw box can be seperated from the steering colomn at the steering box coupling unlike the 64 so you will need the steering colomn as well.
Shouldnt be too hard............

Thanks Sam.

I've been offline for a few weeks so was very pleased to see your posts.
It seems not many people have info on these.

I will send you my email address and do look forward to your pics.

Regards...
