G'day guys, the wife's s**t fairmont has developed yet another problem. Lately it has started changing down gears randomly and it appears to be getting quite bad. She can be doing 100kph when suddenly it changes down into 3rd, or if cruising around town in 3rd it'll go back to 2nd. Now the car is getting very hot after a short drive.
I changed the speed sensor (I think that's what it's called) in the rear of the transmission but it hasn't helped.
Is there any way I can diagnose the problem at home or do I get her to take it to a transmission specialist?
I didn't want to buy a new transmission if it was something simple instead.

Cheers
Jason

Also known as the Inhibitor switch.

I think this is the culprit too.

Found on the passenger side of the transmission.

Cheers

Hey Dude,

Yeah like everyone has said it will be the neutral start switch.

The shaft going from the bottom of the gear lever to the transmission could also be bent from a rock or something.

Cheers,

Like what the other guys said....Nuetral start switch....also know as a gear position switch.
The rubber seal that seals the 2 halves together, perishes, and lets in water.....hence, makes it sh!t itself.
You will usually destroy it trying to get it off as they rust onto the selector shaft.

Ok well that was easy to replace, it ran perfect on the test run but only time will tell.

This box has a dipstick so was easy to check fluid and it's fine.
