Hi, just got a hold of some skyline RB30 diff gears, the 3.9 or 4.1's or whatever. My question is if it can actually fit? I'm assuming the pinion will be needed from the same ratio diff.

Ive got a 3.27 diff at the moment, but shredded my gears, and these were really cheap...

Cheers

one would assume it would be the same as it would need to be? Probably a matched pair?

the pinion alone doesnt determine the ratio, it's the combination of the number of teth on the crownwheel and the number of teeth on the pinion

IIRC the skylines were a 3.9:1, but dont quote me on that

yeah, he said 3.9/4.1 we'll see.
So if the pinion's right it will drop in?

also how do you determine the ratio with pinion and crown? just count the number of teeth on both, and crown/pinion..right?

Cheers

I hope you enjoy whining diff's as R31's came factory standard with them. Nissan had a program for 8 years to replace, free of charge, diff's in R31's due to whining. They'd make 30,000km then start whining again. So you'd have it replaced again. Ask me how I know :)

I was under the impression that the R31 Skyline autos had a 3.7:1 ratio, and the manuals had 3.9:1 ratio. Both of which are 25 spline 2 pinion centres. The Sillohettes had the 28 spline 4 pinion centres. I recall pulling apart a few skyline diffs and counting the splines when i was chasing an LSD centre for my VL.

The pintaras definatly had 4.1:1 ratios.

usually the ratio is stamped on the pinion nose and crownwheel, but the way to calculate the ratio is to divide the number of crownwheel teeth by the number of pinion teeth.....

not 100% sure if it will fit (IIRC there's a couple of different carriers), but make sure when the gears are installed that the contact patterns are checked, etc

Ok, installed the gears... first gear ratio change for me.. um, they ended up been 4.11's. The pinion he lost so I had to go to the wreckers and get one.

anyway, stuck the gears and pinion in, and goes um..... quick but this noise it makes is horrible!
you know that noise that a bus makes? its not whining, its defiantely something bigger lol. MitchG911 was saying about adjusting the pinion, thought you guys might have some input?

Cheers

In other words, I thought I conveyed that R31 diff's are rubbish but it didn't get through :)
