i managed to crush my power steering lines when i did an engine swap, so need to change racks now also.

can this be done with the engine and trans bolted in?
any tips/tricks or things i will need to look out for?
any help would be great as i've never pulled one out of a falcon before and would like to learn all i need before doing it, not while im doing it lol

cant you just change the crushed lines???

If not, Pull the cat off, i think u drop the sway bar. Undo steering shaft (10mm), Two rack nuts and tie rod ends. Lines are lil tricky but nothin too serious.

all you gotta do is undo the steering shaft, take the wheels off, unbolt tie rod ends, undo a couple of bolts and undo the line and it should drop down. i done this a few weekends back on a mates el wagon.

The lines need a 19mm spanner iirc to undo them from the rack.

Drop the sway bar as stated
Unplug the idle up switch
Unbolt the steering shaft
Unbolt the power steer lines from the rack head
Undo tie rod end nuts, note position on rack threads for later
Undo the 2 bolts that hold rack to sub frame
Wiggle it towards the rear of the car & it will drop out of the frame.

Installing is a reversal of the process. Not too hard, just a tad fiddly, and you may need a short 19mm spanner, when i installed the rack on my v8 i had to cut a spanner down to do the job.

Cheers

also if you get a rack off another car and want to use the tie rod ends off the donor car don't leave the tie rod ends on the rack and don't adjust them and if the other cars steering was good you won't need a wheel alignment

I think you mean leave the tie rod ends on the rack, take them off the stub axel. Yes that will keep a reasonable alignment, at least good enough to drive the car for a proper alignment.

If the donor car's tie rod ends are good, it's easier to leave them on the rack undisturbed and swap them over into the car receiving the rack. Especially if you have driven the donor car & know it has a pretty good alignment.

Counting turns & putting your tie rod ends onto the "new rack" is rather fiddly, but it can turn out ok. Never has for me tho.

Cheers

Yes mate, lines are easy if you have the right spanner. They undo from the rack head, and then you remove the low pressure rubber hose from the metal line, and the high pressure hose comes off at the pump & the rack head. Easy.

Cheers

It's a big switch, that is a common leakage point, it will cause your 6cyl to speed up it's idle when you turn the steering, so the engine doesn't stall.
