Therefore, to increase the "line" pressure increases the force behind these parts. In a ford 4 speed gearbox, line pressure is controlled by the variable pressure solenoid (VPR) which is usually referred to as the S5 solenoid (it is number 5 of about 8 solenoids within the box). The transmission computer increases line pressure by reducing current to the S5, reduces line pressure by increasing current to the S5. Usually, just before a gear change, the trans computer increases the current going to the S5 and hence, reduces the line pressure just before the gear change. These shift kits are a resistor which prevents this from occuring, so line pressure is higher than it would normally be. Also another resistor to fool the computers "check" line which it uses to ensure the S5 is doing what it should.

im in the process of making a shift kit for my 4.0l EF but want to have it adjustable,i've just got the parts i hopefully need from jaycar but want to be sure i've got it right before i start cutting ECU wires.
i've added a quick diagram of how i plan to do it but want to be sure i've changed the right resistor for a pot. thanks

Could someone please tell me the colours for the two wires on the TCM of an EL 5L. I know they are pin 9 and pin 27 but i need to know the colours as i cannot see the numbers. Also which resestors would go to which colour wire?

The S5 does not hold just one pressure, It ramps up and down in sequence with the hydraulic valves in the valvebody. The normal shift kits apply a current offset but still allow the S5 to ramp. Otherwise you will be getting some strange shifts.

if there are 8 solinoids in the box, could the one that regulates the pressure to the torque converter be tricked up too? the idea being to reduce fuel consumption.

Does anyone have a diagram how to put a potenciomiter in? i was thinking of the on off light, either a high low switch with a light or the potenciometer with some sort of bar graph.

putting a resisor in line with the 11 pin (trans lockup solinoid) should reduce fuel consumption? there will be less slipage thus less wasted power. only problem is if used with the shift kit it could shread the teeth right off the diff gears because the clutch plates are reunited sooner than it would otherwise. anyone game?

I've seen this asked a number of times already, but does anyone know how to make it so that you can adjust the firmess of the shift?
I'm wondering because I think my box is starting to get a bit tired and instead of a 2k rebuild I was thinking to make it adjustable so it would be forced to stay in gear instead of slipping. Am I on the right track here or does the shift kit maintain full operating pressure for the gear change instead of dropping at the last minute...?

use a potensiohmmetre, the 5 ohm 10 watt one that jaycar sells insted of the 5ohm resistor.
