my dads nf fairlane ghia seems to be stuck in second or third gear. its an auto. from the lights, the revs stick at around 2.5k revs and takes of very slowly. cruising around 80, revs stay at 2.5k. also when you put the foot down, it doesn't drop to a lower gear. anybody able to shed some light on this problem? would be greatly appreciated.

what do you mean by major slip? dont know much about transmissions. it happened last week some time so took it to the mechanic the next day. didnt happen again though. but it started happening again today. had to drive on the freeway aswell so at 100km/hr its sitting at 3k revs.

Its in LIMP HOME MODE (LHM) the auto needs a service and flush as it wouldnt hurt to check the solenoids in the AUTO too.

as has been said its in limp home mode.
your cars computer does this when it thinks you may have dome some damage to your car or somthing has gone wrong.
and instead of just letting it go and somthin catastrophic happening, your computer steps in and puts it into limp home mode so now you know you gotta find somthin thats wrong.

limp home mode keeps your gearbox in 3rd gear. unsure but it may also restrict revving to redline and also retard the timing abit.

thanks for the reply's. yeah sounds like the car is definately stuck in limp mode. did some research and apparently it is possible to do a diagnostic check for faults. anyone know how to do this? the coolant level warning light keeps coming up. could that throw the car into limp mode by any chance?
