hi.. on a camping trip away for the weekend while driving ive started to notice a "whining" noise coming from within the gearbox (T5).. only whines through 1st,2nd,3rd........... 4th,5th and reverse are unafected.. To describe the whining noise it kinda sounds like a quiet (supercharger whine) --whines up and down in pitch with the engine revs..

*Also... when i have the engine running and the T5 in nuetral there is a slight knocking noise from within the gear box.. -but when i push the clutch down it 90% dissapears..

-i believe all these symptoms to be of a worn out T5 box.. -just wanted other peoples opinions... cheers...

PS.. car still drives 100%...

I always thought 1st and 2nd were on their own shaft, third and fourth have their own shaft and fifth is out the back so for it to whine in 1st,2nd and 3rd would have to be unusual....but I could be wrong. :?

sounds like the cluster shaft and possible input shaft bearings are on the way out , even still there is a bearing between the input-output shafts , i had a problem with that bearing gone MIA well basically they were resting in the bottom of the box :(

how long does my T5 have to live? is the T5 -in that codition a lost cause? and to buy a replacement T5 and bolt it up? Trying to fix my T5... _is that like "flogging a dead horse"??

sounds like the input shaft bearing and the cluster bearings. regular oil changes help prolong the life of the box. i use a mix, 80/20% ATF dex3/VMX80 with a Nulon gearbox additive. gives super quick gear changes, even when cold. should be changed every 20,000km or sooner if you been towing.
oil doesn't last forever and its cheaper than g'box rebuilds.

1st,2nd and 3rd are all on the mainshaft, 4th of course is simply the input and output shafts locked together. 5th is on the countergear rear.

Matt, no one can give you a definite answer on the life.
The only way you'll know for sure is to strip the box down - it's not really that hard, but you do need access to a press and some circlip pliers and a DTI.
Before I fitted my T5 (later EBII box), I did strip it down to replace a number of bearings. I managed to get a spare EA box minus input shaft for cheap. You'll find that bar the input shaft and countergear, most parts can be interchanged (I say most as it would take a page of typing to fully explain). Buying new parts like countergears, etc will drive you broke.
Possibly you could get a cheap EA box to run in the car while you look at yours.

EA g'boxes have different ratios to anything after them. they are an XF heavy duty 5speed box. they have a first gear ratio of 3.50:1 and the later g'boxes have a 3.25:1 1st gear.
EA boxes are BorgWarner and the later are BTRE.
Some parts are interchangeable, but cluster is not.

An EA countergear can be fitted to a later g/box, but you need to fit the EA input shaft also. The different gear ratio's are determined by the number of teeth on the input shaft/countergear meshing gear. Then you need to fit the EA parallel roller setup with thrust bearing and remove the tapered bearing off the front of the later mainshaft.
Downside to this is of course you now have the EA ratios . . .

Mine wines in 1st, 2nd and 3rd, its been doing it for a while, Haven't worried about it, I haven't found it to be a problem, it does not make any funny noises apart from the whine when you are on power.

Mine too, in the sprint, only whines when at full noise in 1st, 2nd or 3rd.
Doesn't worry me either.

The Sprint has its own set of ratios, not the same as other V8s. I think they might be the same as an EB GT? I'd have to look it up.

Mine has a wine in 3rd. Only can just hear it. I am about to put Redline MTL gear box oil through it. Will see if that makes any difference...
