Just wondering what the main differences were between the EF,EL and AU XR6 and XR8 boxes.....

Is there actually much difference between an AU XR8 gear box to the one in an EF XR6/Xr8 ?

Are the EL XR6 and ER8 auto boxes different ?

Cheers
Kev

According to my Ellerys manual, the 6 is a 95LE and the 8 is a 97LE. This is the part no difference. I have a feeling that if the maunals have a different input shaft saize, then the autos would probably be the same and have a different input size. Other than that, there doesnt appear to be too much different between the 2 boxes

Was just thinking along the lines or replacing my auto box in the EF Xr6 with one from an EL/AU XR8

The I6 and V8 boxes are exactly the same inside.

Only differences is the bell housing and output shaft (longer in a V8).

You can not put a V8 box into a I6. It physically will not fit, unless you change the bell housing and output shaft, but then you end up with an I6 box...

EF had a dipstick. EL and AU dont. AU have a slightly different bell housing I believe. But inside the casing, they are exactly the same.

And any XR auto box is exactly the same as the ones fitted to a standard I6 or V8.

Ok thanks for clearing that up - was juct after ways of strengthing the box without spending heaps going to extremes ... just figured the higher models may have had a tougher box.

Different (stronger) maincase, stronger output shafts, heavy duty bearings on some clutches. Different calibration (adaptive on most AU models), different and stronger torque converter.
a*** is the same untill BA.
