I'm changing out the s5 on my el ghia. It has a second hand box which is from an EB and I have found the s5 is different from the new one I have for an EL box (s**t). I'm told new s5 for an EB box doesn't exist, so will I get away with putting the EL s5 in? Are they interchangeable?

Help appreciated!

it will only work if you fit the whole valve body from an EL. As for a new S5 not being available for an EB, you just arent looking hard enough.

EB and EL S5 are NOT interchangable due to differences in the valve body.

well fitted the EL s5 to the Eb box and suprise suprise it made no difference. Shifts the same as it did with the buggered EB solenoid in it... holy crap i cant get a break with this gearbox thing. As far as finding a new s5 for the EB box, they are expensive if you can get one. The other option is a reco one and im told its pretty hit and miss with quality.

Anyone have any other ideas? Change out valve body to EL? Will it fit what is entailed in that job?

put a t5 in. problem solved.

or get a good working whole trans and converter

no dice on the t5. I have already replaced the auto once and fitted a reco torque converter so im absolutly over throwing money at this thing.

I chatted with a transmission specialist and he says if the EL solenoid fitted in there shouldnt be a problem, and the current flare and harsh shift in second will be because of out of adjustment bands. This is good news as far as im concerned and it can wait until i have the money together to do it.
