I went shopping for oil for my T5 on the weekend and the recommended oil is 80W90 grade but searching this forum ATF with a friction modifier additive has been recommended.

What is the pros and cons of using either oil and what type are you using.

hi
the ford manual says use atf dexron with additive for the 6 cyl
but they say use gear oil for the v8..
but realistically the 2 boxes are pretty much the same..

i use 80/90 gear oil in mine and the guys at gearbox express said they wont give warranty on a t5 that has atf fluid in it because the atf under high heat will burn the bearings!!
i dont know how accuate this is but thats what i was told..

but i still use gear oil and i havent had any problems in the last year or so ...

I have the Penrite gear oil 75 that in my XR6.
I haven't changed the oil in my XR8 gearbox yet so I guess it still using ATF but I'm not sure.

Had no noises before, have no noises now.... but i like the fact i know what visco's in it and prefer GEAR OIL!

It seems to be a 50% split on ATF and light gear oil.
As there is no compelling reason not to go either way it looks like I can't go wrong with my oil choice.

Castrol Transmax Z (ATF)

Recommended by MalWood and they build and rebuild the boxes, generally in higher power cars, so it must be good :)

Well I use what the manufacturer recommends....there must be a reason they do so...

I use Castrol Transmax Z...it had gear oil in it when I bought it...when I changed to the ATF...changing gear was SOOOOOOOO much easier...

Does that need the friction modifier or use it straight?
