Hey guys, My t5 has a whine in 1st and 2nd gear just wondering what i expect to be the possible problem and what it could cost to repair/rebuild?

I'd be thinking it's bearing related, not too hard to fix. Drain the box & fill it with the recommended fluid & the correct amount, then see what happens, if the whine continues.

I get a little whine in 3rd recently, after a change in fluids. I will be going back to what i was using before. The current gear oil I'm using is a bit thinner than i previously used, without any whine.

I have changed the oil, but to no avail still whines. I guess i will live with it for now, and find a good exchange box. Thanks for an idea on the problem.

Np. Have you thought about trying some gear oil stabilizer? That might shut it up for a while & reduce the wear rate until you can swap the box for another one....

hiya, what oil are you using in it? and its def not the thrust bearing? I've seen those wine, and people think they gearbox bearings are stuffed...

Yeah i am using Gulf western dextron III ATF oil, which i believe is the right oil? anyway just out of shear curiosity what is cheaper a rebuild or change?

I thought the v8 spec t5 used atf & the I6 spec used gear oil? Someone wanna confirm this plz?

What i could find, and what was given in the parts/service book at auto barn it was ATF dextron III oil, Look i could very well be wrong may be also the why its whining because of the light wieght oil?

isn't that part of a t5 the whine on low gears?

seriously the dex III auto fluid recommended for both boxes, as technically there the same guts.
