hey.
im thinking of buying an iphone, the 16gb one.
i have used a friends iphone and must admit i loved it, but im pretty sure it wasnt the 16gb one.
however out of the 3 people i know that have an iphone, 1 person has had major issues with it.

so does anyone here have an iphone and what are your opinions on it. for eg: is it reliable?. a waste of money? etc.

thanks

Personally it has an awesome screen but i think the N95 8gig is a more featured phone and its cheaper and still a high end model. Id also look at the Samsung models coming out which is their competitor offering more features than the Iphone and probably cheaper.

if your a mac person, get one. the 8 gig is pleantly big enough for me. go for a cap plan from optus (DONT GO TELSTRA!) i think the extended warrenty is like $3 extra if your worried about it. havent had a prob with my 3g so far. just uses the battery a little, turn 3g off and the screen down and its not so bad

I have a 16GB one, they are awsome. There is also new software 3.0 coming out with major upgrades soon too. my missus has a n96 16GB, it has a great camera, apart from that the iphone is better in every way.

I've had the 16GB 3G since they day they came out and i love it. But saying that there will be people that hate it too, but if you're happy about it and can handle not having MMS and not being able Blue Toothing porn to mates (can still use blue tooth devices) then get one. And if you do happen to have a problem with the phone, you can take it to a mac store and they replace it on the spot with a brand new one.

I'm currently tossing up on whether or not to get one.
The actual phone I have a lot of issues with - the limits on bluetooth, MMS and the s**t camera. But the reason why I'm actually considering buying one is how many non-Apple things are no supporting the iPhones. For example my Uni now has set up the wifi to work on iPhones. We have a hard enough time getting it to work on our laptops with the security crap they make us use, but they've got guides for getting it going on the iPhones now (obviously the IT department nerds must have all gone out and bough iPhones). There's also a lot of other services that are integrating the iPhone into there services.
I was looking to buy the upcoming Nokia N97 when it's released next month but it will be at least double the price of the basic iPhone which makes me wonder if it's worth it, while being a vastly superior phone hardware wise it doesn't have the after market support that the iPhone has developed.

I got a samsung omnia which has very similar stats to the Iphone (screen size, design, its lighter, better camera etc...) the only thing i have to complain about is the Media player on the omnia is no where as good as the Iphone but otherwise it s**t all over it, its cheaper, better equiped and you don't need to jailbrake it to get the good apps for free! there are plenty of apps for it to make it almost the same as the Iphone too if you want, you just need to spend the time installing them and finding them, such as the slide to unlock etc... and it too is a touch screen

http://www.gsmarena.com/ this website will help you choose a new phone because so many other people review the phone and some people are very hard on the phones etc...

Here is a comparo

One of the other major advantages with the iPhone is the plans that they are avaliable on. The plans that the iPhones are avaliable on generally have decent monthly free credit and free download amounts. A few carriers won't offer these plans without the free iPhone attached either though.
But once again, this isn't an advantage of the iPhone itself, it's a service that's linked to it.
Sadly Apple have made a product that in many ways is lower than industry standard (e.g. at the time of iPhone release Nokia had 5MP cameras with proper camera Xenon flashes - iPhone gets 2MP with no flash, no MMS, no video recording, lack of a basic converter program - sure many of these can be overcome with apps installed, it still makes you wonder why they wern't there in the first place when they are standard on so many other handsets). But because of the great services that are linked to using the iPhone the phone itself has been a big success. Just shows what some clever marketing and that can achieve.
With that said last night I bought one, already hate the phone as a phone, but it's got a lot of advantages in other areas.

bought one after using a freinds and playing around with the ones phone shops have, and done a bit of research into them before buying.

I must say I'm loving it. only down side i have is the battery. and maybe the 2mp camera i still like the camera but yeh 5mp would be good lol. never realy had a problem with the not being able to send mms or video record because i never realy done that on my old phone but them "problems" have been fixed with the new 3.0 software coming out. but yeh as i said in another thread it is deffinently the BEST phone by far that i have ever owned or used

still prob would have bought one if id started looking earlier....they should have some good deals comming soon as the phone is due for a new model update in june

After having my iPhone for a few weeks now, I'm pretty sure that I will be going back to Nokia with the release of the N97. iPhone is great and can do so many extras, but it absolutely fails in being able to do stuff that my fathers basic black and white screened Nokia can do. For example with the calander the alarm tone plays a low volume noise once for a few seconds, hardly enough to really alert anyone, setting the time for the alert to play you are limited to certain set options - on the day of the event, 5 minutes before, 10 min, 30, 1 hour, 2 hour, 1 day, 2 day - surely a full functioned smartphone should have the capability to alert me 1.5 hours prior to the event if that's what I would like done? This is a fairly basic feature that would have been little effort to put in.
It's also very poor at being an organiser. Most s60 Nokias and Windows Mobile devices will display information on the background of the stand by screen, such as calendar info for that day. iPhone can do this with the add of an app, but it is very sluggish, and because it's not really integrated, it doesn't have function that you can tap the calendar event and be taken to that event in the calendar - which other smart phones do.
Really it depends on what you want to do with the device, the iPhone looks good and seems to have all the bells and whistles, but behind it all, it's lacking many of the very basic functions that are standard in phones of much lower value.
Personally I'm holding out for the release of OS 3, it should be next month (with a possible next gen iPhone), I'm willing to give the iPhone another chance - as it does have the best touch screen interface compared to anything else on offer. But the N97 is also tiped to be released next month, and if the rumours are true that Nokia have shifted to the same type of touch screen as used on the iPhone, it could be a very good contender - it's Symbian OS, which is very well established and developed (heaps of apps available just like iPhone), has a full QWERTY keyboard and a mouse type device as well as the touch screen, has a true widescreen ratio screen, it is not that much larger than the iPhone (I think only 4mm thicker and it's not as wide) and it's a Nokia...

I havnt realy heard much about the nokia N97, might go have a look at it on the net.

The only real way for someone to decide weather they want an iphone is to go out and use one I reckon, I had a look at lots or reviews and comments on the net before I bought mine and it just confused me because there are soooo many people that love them but there are also alot of people that hate them LOL it gets such a mixed reaction from people.

as far as im concerned theres only 2 reasons to get an iphone:

1) apps. seriously awesome

2) most stereos these days revolve around the ipod. not everyone wants an ipod and most people want a phone. why not combine the 2?

those are the reasons i got an iphone. plain old consumerism lol. most of these newer high end phones are pretty great and more practical then the iphone too. im pretty fond of the samsungs actually. but how many people here have had a phone for longer then 2 years? i havent - i keep killing mine. bad news for the iphone lol

Number 2 I agree with, but at the same time, most people with an iPhone already have an iPod, and personally I wouldn't want to leave my phone lying around with the stereo all the time (it would be hard to hear it ringining etc).

As for number 1, apps are in no way new or unique to the iPhone. They've been around for ages, I remember getting my first Symbian OS Nokia in grade 11 (7 years ago now) it was that black and white egg shapped one (6600 I think), Apps were available for download back then. Most of the stuff you see available for the iPhone has been available for Symbian OS for even longer, the difference is that Nokia and the other Symbian OS users never marketed them, or made it as easy for the average consumer to acquire them (probably because you had to download them onto your PC from websites, transfer them onto the phones memory card (or blutooth them across), then use a file explorer to install them) as mobile internet just wasn't as available back then. My point being that the iPhone is in no way a unique new development in this area, it's a copy of whats been around for a long long time, just marketed a lot more effectively.

well i did end up getting one. i have had it for about 2 months now.
i cant fault much with it. except for the fact that the battery life is pretty s**t. and you need to download an app to record videos.

yea, apple did a great job marketing with the whole ipod thing. i guess i just found it easier tryin to get apps for iphone then other phones (worryin bout compatability, etc... too much of a hassle really) which i guess comes back into my whole reason 2

what is the video recorder app called? the non jail-breakey one?

apparently you have to use that jailbreak thing for the video camera. i havent yet done that though.
just a couple of questions
does the jailbreak thing void any warranty or anything like that?
and in order to download apps i found you have to have an account with i tunes. i have tried to register but it says i need a credit card. however someone told me they are a member without any credit card. so does anyone know if you actually need a credit card or not??
