People who fly Australian flags on their cars have more racist attitudes than those without flags.

The finding is in a study by the University of Western Australia, which surveyed 513 people at last year's Australia Day fireworks display on Perth's Swan River foreshore, and found that one in five people had attached flags to their cars to celebrate.

Sociologist and anthropologist Professor Farida Fozdar says 43 per cent of those with car flags believe the White Australia Policy had saved Australia from many problems experienced by other countries, while only 25 per cent without flags agreed.

She says a total of 56 per cent of people with car flags fear their culture and values are in danger, compared with 34 per cent of non-flaggers.

West Australian senior minister Troy Buswell says flying the flag is a matter of personal choice, and he flies an Australian flag, or a state flag, at his house, but doesn't use it wrongly.

They surveyed 513 people out of how many millions here in Australia and they claim that people who fly the Australian flag are more racist than those who don't? What a load of crap!
I'm a proud Aussie and I'll fly the flag and I don't care if people say I'm racist.

Our culture and values ARE in danger.

Ever since that fatefull day in Cronulla the flag has been forever linked with racist over tones whether you like it or not.

In my opinion the flag belongs either hoisted up high on a pole or held in hand. Multiple flags on cars or capes dragging on the ground are where you have your racist overtones.

And those made in china aussie flag bikinis, boardies and thongs are judt plain f**k. Wiping your a*** with the flag would be less disrespectful, not to mention they are the wrong shade of blue to begin with.

I don't think this is an argument that will be settled anytime soon....

I know where I stand and I wish there were more people like us, unfortunately were becoming the minority.

It's not about being racist. Some of us like myself just grew up being ridiculed for being an Anglo Saxon in our own country. I've seen plenty of races come and go and it's true, some are categorically worse than others.

You can't compare Buddhism to Mohammed can you ? No, that's because one teaches a peace loving respecting culture who choose to keep to themselves then theres the other where we have our warmongering disrespectful pack of animals that needs to be put down. That contrast isn't racism, it's just social observation... we aren't the only country in the world who watches the news...

When sharks naturally migrate within their own habitat and accidentally mistake people for food we feel the need to go out and kill them. When one race takes over and dominates a neighbourhood it's alright because they're expressing their multiculturalism ?

And also, I can't be racist when I hate everyone equally.

The vast majority or Australians have turned into a pack of whingers anyway, we need to re-ascertain our own culture before we embrace any others. Our polical system is a joke, corporate gain and greed have destroyed this country and what's left of it the pathetic excuse for australians put their hand out and take. The 'blue collar' aussies which used to BE this country now seem to be the urinals of the country, for the benefit of the rich AND the poor.

Racism is something some soft C**k thought up to make themselves feel better about invading someone elses country. Australians aren't the only 'racist' society out there either, I've seen other countrymen raise their flag to.

The whole study is flawed.
From what I have been told by many people over the years apparantly Adolf himself was more racially tolerant then myself.
Is there any Australian flags on my cars? Nope. So a totally racial prick does not have a flag on his car. So much for that uni study.

Although both sets of my grandparents were born overseas, my parents (who were born here) consider themselves Australian despite being largely influenced by a European background.
I have many friends who're born here and their parents born overseas and they still don't consider themselves Australian..

IMO racism all comes down to how you're brought up at home and the life you're taught to live.
The way I was brought up was if you were born here you're Australian. Simple.
My grandparents agree, they arrived here many years ago (way back in the 40's-50's to escape war) and they were forced to adopt to the Australian way of life which was that of a blue collar worker.

I look at them now and although their English is still not that good, they don't hold a grudge against any race; In fact they're thankful and proud to call Australia home as it gave them a better quality of life without war.

The point I started at but never really got to was there's a difference between patriotism and racism.

This survey is just more statistical data manipulated to create political controversy, and it obviously worked to some extent.

And to contribute to the stats, I flew no flags, what white Australia Policy? and I do feel that our culture and values have diluted somewhat.

I'd rather see people flying flags than burning them, no matter what country it signifies.
