What is this sensor?

On the AU engine there is another one just to the right of it:

I assume this second one doesn't get connected if putting the AU engine into the EF?

the pics not working?

but the first one above the balancer is the crank angle sensor..
and the other one that goes into the timing case just to the right of it is the cam angle sensor.
it replaced the sensor that goes in the dizzy hole on ef..
but you can just leave it disconnected and fit the ef one into the dizzy hole...

Ah brilliant, because that is what I have done.

Sorry to interrupt again --- I've got myself an EL engine and am throwing all the EL bits away and putting the EF bits on. Old HuggieBear suggested I'd have to swap the front timing cover to put this sensor in... Since having the engine in the garage I've seen the timing cover has the threaded holes for the sensor to be positioned, but I am unsure how this sensor actually works. Does the EF harmonic balancer have a set of teeth similar to an ABS ring? The EL balancer has nothing at all that I would equate to providing any input to this sensor.

Am just trying to avoid pulling the timing cover off only to find I didn't have to! There's no oil leaks around the area now, so would prefer not to d**k with it!!!

if the timing case has the 2 small holes for the crank sensor then you just need to unscrew the one on your ef engine and bolt it onto the el..
as for the balancer you will need to use your ef one as the toothed cog is part of the ef balancer..
the el balancer dont have it as it uses a dizzy,...

TROYDUDE, I bend at the waist and bow whilst waving my hat ceremonially in your direction.

"TOOTHED" cog? Haahahaahahah.... That's the funniest name for a part ever.

It's real cool that the EF timing cover isn't required....... It's been modified, in a kind of sideways direction... Putting it back on would have been backwards...

Here's a picture of the sensor that we're talking about...
