Have an AUIII dedicated gas wagon March 2002.
Just replacing head gasket & timing cover gaskets. It has Crank sensor AND Cam angle sensor in timing cover. The dizzy position is only an oil pump drive. Is NOT VCT. I see the timing chain has 4 yellow links (2 next to each other & the 2 others are apart) I assume these have something to do with cam angle sensor. What do these line up with - I did not mark or pay attention when taking apart. Richie.

G'day mate,
As far as the chain is concerned the marks on the link are irellevant to the engine timing and or sensor operation they are simply manufacturing marks and thats it as the pick up for the crank angle sensor is on the harmonic balancer. So long as you make sure all your timing gears are lined up correctly you should be sweet. Also with the cam angle sensor ( sensor where dizzy normally goes ) this is not just an oil pump drive and if you have removed it it needs to be put back in ther correct position otherwise the car will not run right. The Cam sensor is mounted thru a 1/2" hole in the front middle of timing cover & has electrical connector to this.
There is NO connector where dizzy used to be. Richie

Found an obliging Ford Worshop Manager - The yellow links are important & there is a procedure for lining them up (he provided details).

Yeah, was going to say ^JAse^ is so far wrong its not funny. AU's dont have the traditional dot type timing marks the e-series used in the past. Engine timing is set by aligning those yellow links with marks (usually lines) on each of the sprockets. And the oil pump drive is just that, an oil pump drive. Not a cam sensor, as this is on the timing cover in an AU. I never knew Steady had quoted something that insightful. I will have to remember that.
Just for fun, do a search for all of WILDEB's posts with the word mechanic. Its a laugh. "I'm a mechanic, listen to me" or "I'm a mechanic, I get trade" or "I'm a very picky mechanic... Best is though "I'm not sure, I'monly an apprentice mechanic". |

I cant remember exactly, but, when the motor is on TDC, the 2 yellow links which are beside each other line up with a marking on the cam sprocket, I think
 That, and the little dot on the sprocket should sit about 1cm above the head..... I didnt take much notice myself actually, but then again if its all ziptied up then you dont get these problems. |

Job done!
Once you line up yellow links with various lines on the gears you can also see that dots also line up using 'old' method - cam gear 3 deg above rocker rail & crank gear keyway aligns with dot on aux shaft gear. Cam sensor reads a protrusion on the aux shaft gear. Maybe the new method is more accurate. Someone told me that it places the chain back in exactly the correct place - I cannot see why it makes any diffence where the chain is - as long as the gears line up. Thanx. Richie.

I doubt its more accurate in a timing sense.
If you see how they assemble these engines in Geelong, and who assembles them, chances are its just the easiest method for their staff to relate to. Lining up colours and big marks on sprockets is probably less time consuming that trying to line up pissy little stamped dots here and there. |
