Auto or manual?

Regardless to both no they are same family but different and won't fit without modification (easy for manual, just need a special bellhousing and custom tailshaft; not sure for auto, could be done but would be more trouble then what it is worth).

For both auto and manual they are essentially the same in terms of function/strength though.

Manual and auto are not the same in terms of strength either. The internals are quite different.

The auto you maybe right, I was only basing on a quick look at parts numbers for both, before deciding I shouldn't attempt to rebuild myself.

As long as you are referring to world class manual's (i.e. all v8's and i6 eb2 onwards) then the overall strength of the boxes are the same. The gear sets in 8's may be higher rated, but it doesn't make any difference in reality; they are still very narrow gears compared to say a t56 or tko, they still flex like f**k, and 3rd gear is still on the end of the shaft and going to cause you grief.
