having trouble getting my mates hq gts to run. he had it running a couple of months ago after new motor and new holley 650 vac sec. always use to run rich and kept getting worse and started backfiring. was left for a while tried starting and wouldnt go. put in new plugs as they were fuel soaked. got it running and set timing (was at tdc). now it pours black smoke and will still run with mixture screws all the way in? wondering if it could be float levels and how to adjust. It does not have the sight screw on side or screw and locknut on top.
carby is same set up as pic attached( not actual carb)

Yeah I'd check the float levels, but without any external adjustment of the float level and the fuel level sight plugs not being fitted it's a difficult job to get right. Could also be the power valve. Those earlier Holleys never had the blow-out protection valve fitted from new.

But really the best place for one of those spreadbore Holleys is the nearest rubbish bin. Is it a LIST 6210?

Check the power valve...replace it with an 85 power valve. Also another trick is to replace the accel jet nozzle with a 350 ( list 4778 ) Holley one, gives better direction and a little more fuel too.
If you wish to go further, replace float bowls with centre hung ones, and a duel fuel line set-up.
I've never had probs with them, I just set them up better than Holley do.
How big are the holes around the idle screws????....if they have really big holes around them, then they are the " screw in to make rich, screw out to lean ".....or if the holes around the idle mix screws are small, then in is lean, out is rich.

If you try and run a conventional shooter on a spreadbore it will suck fuel over from the accelerator pump due to the design of the non-return valve. The picture above shows the anti-pullover style shooter which is needed for all spreadbore holleys.
