Ride: 1995 Ford EF Fairmont V8

Location: Adelaide
SA, Australia

Hey,
Just bought my first Ford, a 95 EF Fairmont V8 in amazing condition.
On the weekend my mate was looking under the bonnet at a loose tensioner and got excited about a HO stamped on top of the engine block. He didn't tell me much about it, but said it was a rare engine type.
Would anyone be able to give me some more information as to what this means?

hahaha.. rare? no. It's the same 5L weezor fitted to every e series falcon.

Their a good solid engine with few problems though. Keep it serviced regularly and you shouldn't have any issues for a long time.

Although a slug in stock form ( mainly due to the intake manifolds and heads ) they can make decent power with a bit of $$$ thrown at them.

I personally think they are one of the best sounding small blocks.

What would you recommend as basic mods for it, that aren't gonna send me broke?
Thinking about a manual conversion, but I haven't really got the time or know-how to do it myself and have no idea how much it'll cost.

Oh, it had a LPG tank installed about a year ago, dunno if that makes a difference to what you can do to it.

What do you want from the vehicle? How much power? What's your budget?

A set of GT40p heads, explorer intake manifold, larger MAF, slightly larger injectors, and a good exhaust may be a good place to start.

But then at the same time would you want a camshaft swap? while the top end is apart.

Do you want to keep it N/A or go forced induction later down the track? How many km's has the donk done? You need to work out a good combo of part's.

Research is your friend in regards to engine modification and knowing what you want out of it.

Just on this topic, HO used to mean something on the Phase II & Phase III back about 40 years ago ( GTHO where HO = Handling Option ) and was the most powerful engine that Ford Australia fitted to their GT's. However, these particular 5L Windsors in the E-series were taken from the U.S. Mustang 5L lineup ( where HO = High Output ) but as explained above, these 5L's are running a restricted breathing set of heads and HO in this case means f**k all in terms of performance.

Yeah, he said is was a GTHO.

Does that mean that changing the heads will go a long way in terms of improving performance?

Yes, these engines perform very well if you are willing to upgrade the heads, intake manifold, cam, fuel injectors and dyno tune them. You would be able to double your power output depending on your choice of parts.

heads, intake manifold, cam ect would still probably come in cheaper than getting a manual conversion. wreckers generally want $2500 for a manual conversion and they rarely come up for sale privately. but an AU Explorer manifold, GT40 or GT40P heads come up for sale all the time, and are fairly cheap.

Explorer intake $300 - $400
GT40p heads $600 ( give or take )
Cam ( $200 - $500 ) depending on cam and if it's used.

Plus larger T/B, MAF, top-end gasket kit and other parts.

Just to give you abit of an idea on price mate.

Exhaust and extractors will probly come in at the most expensive single part.
