Assuming that a 408 is just a 393 with oversized pistons I'd just go with the 393. Was never a fan of overboaring anyway.

393 has a 3.85" crank
408 has a 4" crank

The bore is the same

I'd probably stay with the 393, the 408/4" stroke can have camshaft clearance issues, but it will make bulk torque. 393 cubes will still pull like a school boy, and make good power with standard heads, or good heads. Less mucking about if your building it yourself. If you getting the engine built, ask the shop what they recommend, they have probably done a few.

They probably are yeah, but like I said I already have them
The plan is to put them on a clevo stroker short motor with a solid flat tappet cam.
When or "if" I get bored with the power I'll pull them off & get them ported & probably upgrade to a roller cam at the same time

Sounds cool, but i reckon go for the roller straight up, even if it is just a hydraulic. Easier than going thru the hole flat tappet run-in hassles...

go 393 185s are too small for 408 and may ping unless you get a huge cam and will be useless on street then you want low torque not high hp, talk to engine builder first , stay with one persons info and stick with a tried combo or you will find out the hard way to happiness

mate i went a 393 over a 409 purely for piece of mind, as iam running the CHI 218cc heads and turn mine to 7500rpm, but i also opted to resin fill my block to the welshplugs, for that added extra strength, the 218's possed a clearence problem when i droped the donk in check out my Gallery pic's and you will see what i mean, the 185s will be great on a 393 and will make an awsome street engine, that will leave most in your wake :D and you will be able to achieve awsome power without turning it past 6000rpm...

Mate ide go the 393 for piece of mind but the fact the 185's produce all the power below the 6000rpm ide be very tempted to step up to the 408, although i am not aware if the are capable of maching that amount of cubes

Just don't listen to these two comments and you'll do ok. haha
Both are that far from the truth, its not funny.

The CHI185's actually work REALLY good with 408 cubes and if cammed right will make well over 600HP. Or if you want it more streetable, stick with a smaller flat tappet strreet cam and make 500-550 easy.

I only have 205CC AFD heads on my 408C and going on 4 years, i havnt had to touch a single thing on the motor, and i shift at 7500rpm when on it. And i'm close to 600hp in the old girl.
