hey guys i know iv posted about this before but i have been given another idea,

i have been told to put a single 2 1/2 inch system on my 220kw XR8 through to the rear muffler but when you get to the rear muffler cut the rest of that section off and put a 3 inch hotdog and 3 inch pipe to the end to keep that big 3 inch grunty sound all the while getting the better performance down bottom from the 2 1/2 inch system from the cats back...

i found it to be a very interesting idea and the guy that was telling me about it said hes done it to a few before and they get a hell of a big punch down bottom and still sound fantastic...

hope to get a few opinions from a few guys on here as everyone knows their stuff and i always get very helpful ideas... cheers guys

NO!!! Twin 2.25 or single 3". Single 2.5 is not enough for a 5L!

Well, you might get a little bit of extra power down low, but you'd be sacrificing a noticable amount of top end power. The low end gain would be bugger all over a properly made twin exhaust.

Besides, twin pipes sound better (a matter of opinion, but I'm right anyway. :) )

i know it goes against everything that makes sense but iv got 3 guys that have been doing exhausts for 20-25 years telling me 2 1/2, im not a fan of twin on 8's, im more prone to the big a** 3 inch... would love to see any clips of 8's with 2 1/2 and with 3's...

dont go a single 2.5 a bloke here had 1 on his ts50 5L and it was a restriction. u could hear the thing struggle high in the rev range. depends a lot on headers and cats as to the sound u will get also, i did send u a pm a while ago about extractors. anyway i'll take this chance to plug my ol girl.
this is a vid of normal driving. it was fairly worked, but resonably quiet at cruise and loud as when opened up http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2ndB1qFD3s4

same car at skidpan, if u can hear over the noisy s**t ba  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=it0VKu5q1L4

same car at the drags. 13.6 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q1wc122g19Q

and another xr8 i had with a twin 2.5. do note the sound changed drasticly after putting on extractors and cats, it sounded much beefier http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hYQlCKua_Zk
both cars i had the twin system put on and only found gains everywhere. although both were manuals, i didn't feel any loss of power or torque

I should measure the systems on my Xr8's, both have been modified from the factory exhaust setup.

I would have thought that anything over 200kw would be needing a 3" all the way thru?

Cheers

well i ended up goin the single 3 inch, god im glad i did... got a great boost in power and the sound is unbeleivable... its a bit loud but hey when it sounds good why not have it loud...

i got a lukey rear section from repco where i work on the weekend which has a hotdog in it, then got the centre section made custom, the guy put a strait throgh in it so im guessing thats why its so loud... may change it later down the track if it doesent settle after a while...

will have a clip up soon :D

Cool. The straight thru will make it fairly loud, but it will settle a tad. I got the exhaust done on the mighty boy last week, only done 150kms so it's not yet settled.

You work @ repco too. Cool. I'm currently working for Recpo, and can't wait to hear the sound file from your Xr8's exhaust.

Cheers
