right so here goes...
i buy the nl last week,5lt with 250ks and appears to have been looked after.
i get it home to discover a horrible rattle/knock
at first i thought it was flex plate...checked it and not it
then i take to mechanics..one says oil change...another says power steering pump.both of which didnt seem right to me..i take it to a 3rd mechanic who points out that the passenger side cat is stuffed and thats where the noise is coming from...makes sense cos it is more audible from that side..
so i do an oil change and use nulon 20/50 oil and while im under the car i listen to the noise myself and yeay it sounds like the cat...
BUT
since i did the oil change my oil pressure gauge is all over the shop...from in the red at 7 to none at all and anywhere in between, changing when it feels like it....
SO im starting to wonder wether all this is caused by a stuffed oil pump...rattle and all....
any opinons guys?
cheers.

Oil pressure would not vary that much, I would suspect the pressure sender is faulty.
Put a pressure guage on it and check first or if you cant access one then swap the sender out with another.

I know a power steering pump will rattle but haven't heard an oil pump *touch wood*. If you are trying to isolate the sounds, I recommend getting an automotive stethoscope to find exactly where the noise is coming from; they work wonders!

I too had a similar issue where the pressure gauge was all over the place. Changed the sender unit and all is good.

The oil pressure senders in ef/el are absolutely sh*thouse. Mine has been dodgy forever. Just forget about it, or replace it if it means that much to you. Will probably fail again anyway haha.
