Hi, Im from South Africa and here we have very little info on falcons. I have a Ford Ranchero GLI Column shift 4L 154kw With distributor, 1999 model and I would like some advice on how to get more kw out of it. Would a XR6 top fit my engine? and would it make much of a difference? On what degree can I cut my cam shaft? Will a vernier time gear make much of a difference? If I gas flow my head will it make a difference? What type of aftermarket chip would fit my vehicle best? Any advice would be appreciated, Thank you!!!

Hi,

You can change many things, and it will cost a lot for not much more power. Things have changed over the years, now the engines are already " modded " so you can put in a lot of money for little return. Resale wont be much better either. Diff ratio will help, but a Turbo would be the biggest thing for a change. All sorts of issues like it wont be standard so tuning and parts issues may become a big problem.

Have you thought about getting an XR6 Turbo Ute ? It will do all you want and will hold its value better.

I'm not sure just how much in the way of aftermarket stuff is available for you guys over there in South Africa.. but to answer one of your questions.

Would a XR6 top fit my engine? - Yes, as long as it is from the roughly the same series. Do a little research on this site.. there is tons of good information.

and would it make much of a difference? - Not an overly huge amount on its own, however with supporting mods like a decent induction and exhaust system you will notice the difference.

Have you thought about getting an XR6 Turbo Ute ? It will do all you want and will hold its value better. Unfortunately I have not come across one of those in South Africa, would very much like one. I have already put a better exaust system on and a K&N filter which gave a bit more performance and I have and XR6 top available. If that does not give enough, are there any V8 engines that would fit directly onto my automatic gearbox? And if i decide to put a turbo directly onto the engin would it shorten the lifetime of my gearbox? Thanks for the help

V8 Engines are not compatable for your 6 Cylinder auto. V8 gear boxes are diffrent.
And yes putting a turbo engine on your auto will definately shorten the life of your gearbox because you are running alot more power through it. Also depends how the car is driven to how long the auto will last.

Hi,

If you have an XR6 head available, you will get more HP. There is also a different fuel pressure reg that goes with it. Downtime and freight will hurt, any part you will have a problem with or break you cant just buy from a Wrecker or Dealer.

A XR6 Turbo ute can be bought here for $10K up, and with shipping will cost another $5K or so. It will have better handling and more than enough go out of the box. All standard parts, so no tune or Rego problems and any fault Codes that come up will be right.

Just a suggestion to think about, at the end it will most likely end up with much better resale value and be a nicer drive. Many people keep changing things and if they looked at the Total cost buying the right car to begin with would have been a better / cheaper choice.

Same reason they would sell a Commodore ute as an El Camino. Familiarity.

Falcon got a really, really bad name in South Africa back in the 60's....Hence, they got Fairmonts....like an XY Fairmont GT.
