I bought a 01 Au2 a week ago , when i take off if i press the pedal to fast the engine will die , take my foot off it starts again , it doesnt do it in park or neutral , it revs out fine then , when i drive normally it fine and i can get it to the speed limit ( 110 ) , it sounds like a dry bearing in the fan belt area aswell ( like an ungreased pully sound ) , anyone had this problem , thought it might be the fuel pump , but i can flatten it and it wont die in park

The dry bearing sound could very well be just that. There are two idler pulleys (one ribbed, one flat) that are "lubed for life" but do ultimately fail. They are cheap and easy to replace.

The engine dying does sound like fuel starvation. Can I ask a silly question? How much fuel is in the tank when it does this? If the fuel is very low, hard acceleration can slosh the fuel to the back of the tank, so the fuel pump is sucking air. Of course it would be fine when stationary in N or P.

If it doesn't do it even a little when you snap the throttle open fast in neutral, it can't be a vacuum problem, as it would experience a similar instantaneous vacuum drop in neutral as it does in gear.

I'd also check the leads, plugs and coil-pack as well. My EF had a similar issue ages ago, felt almost like the trans slipping. Only did it under load and within a certain rev range (Can't remember exactly what it was... 2 - 2,500 rpm or thereabouts), it turned out to be dodgy ignition leads. Swapped them out, new coil-pack and platinum plugs as well, never had an problem since.

Thanks for the answers

it does it if the tanks is full or empty ( doesnt like hill starting on empty )

as of yesterday ( sunday ) it has developed a rough start - it wont start first try second it splutters abit , not that bad but i notice it , but starts

i have an old ED here , i gather the fuel pump is different , but ive had the leads replaced so ill use them

it has to be a fuel supply problem , when the engine dies i dont lose electrics , no warning lights come on , someone mentioned the throttle body sensor but why would it restart when i take my foot off ( it restarts like nothing had even happened )

im going to replace the pump , leads and spark plugs , see if it helps

ED leads won't fit a coil pack. AUII/III are different again from the EF/AUI leads as well. Check your fuel filter as well.

Having same/similar problem.
The car starts but cannot take much acceleration maybe 5 - 10mm on pedal, any more and it pops/dies as if it's out of fuel. The effect is not as bad when I'm moving but starting from the lights is gonna get me abused. 20 - 30 meters at 10 - 15kph. I put a new fuel filter on & no difference.
Anyone find out the exact cause?
