I'm probably going to get flamed here. A couple of the bores aren't perfect and have slight "roughness" midway down. I haven't sent them to a shop, just honed as best I can by hand.

So erm... cough...I'll just... cough... throw in some cast rings and hopefully they'll do the final smoothenininging

So, I have no time off to get to the shop and finish the motor, also it doesn't help that I just bought a Hayabusa to distract me further.... I've enlisted the shop owner (my mate Stu) to complete the engine and fit for cash. My deadline is before new years.

In the meantime I've stripped the interior which I can do at home. I'm changing the colour to black and I'm fitting ba xr8 ute seats and au console

The speaker mount was like that when bought and it's very average fitment and design. I'll keep it "as is" for now and spray it flat black with the rest of the interior.

I was surprised how much the colour improved the standard interior.

Been a while. Thought I'd add another quick update. Due to work commitments I moved interstate and the car has remained in South Australia. It's currently at my friends garage but as the the saying goes, good things come to those who wait. My mate has managed to source a 5 speed. Originally I was going to do an auto with tiptronic conversion but the t5 will respond better with the cam. I also have a 3:45 diff now waiting to be thrown in, so I might need to make a 2 week trip to Adelaide shortly haha. Unfortunately I still have no idea when the car will be finished.

New Update:

I'm back in SA on business.

The rebuilt motor (pending cam and valve upgrades to be installed), t5 with short shift, 3:45 and j3+ecu are all sitting aside ready for the conversion. Unfortunately the more parts I start taking off the xh the more body issues I'm finding. As tough as the xh looks (especially on the eb gt style rims) it is getting on in years.

Bringing it up to spec is now a huge amount of work and is going to cost more than buying a mint XH XR8! and thats without upgrading brakes to 330mm, suspension upgrade, cabin extension, etc etc. After looking on the market, AU/BA look like a wiser decision and much more suited to my recent time/work schedule.
Unfortunately parts will go up for Sale. I Might keep the engine as it's been rebuilt with reconned heads/yella terra gear or might sell depending on interest.

Shame as it would've been a good ute but just not worth the money, considering it was a budget build.

Hi mate,ah that's a shame, have been looking forward to see your progress-would have been an awesome beast, you could keep an eye out for a rust free XH but au/ba probably makes better sense $ wise at least, cheers Johnny.

Thanks mate,

It was a lot of fun researching about the old 302's. I knew very little about ford V8's so it's been worth the work. Thankfully the main cost has been my labour so it doesn't owe me too many dollars.
It's still all sitting in the workshop at the moment so you never know.

I test drove a few AU XR8 utes which were okay but not worth the asking price considering their condition. I then went up in dollars and looked at a BA/BF super pursuits which I would actually be tempted to buy for the right price.
