Hey guys.

I really have no idea with a lot of the electrics of a car and starter motors.

I had problems with my EA after EF motor conversion running distributor EL ecu with j3. The car ran fine for a long time. then one day, once it was hot it would not start. Then when cold it would start, i took it to an auto electrician and asked if they could let it warm up or take it for a drive then see what the problem was they said it started fine and nothing was wrong, i drove it home turned it off 5 mins later try'd to drive it and it wouldn't start. Now the car wont start at all tryed a new battery still nothing not even the clicking noise no noises at all. Sometime Jiggling the wire to the solenoid on the starter motor would work but not anymore i've traced the wire back as far as i can and nothing seems broken or torn, is there a way to test the starter motor? i was told to give it a tap and that didn't work. Can i take the starter out and hook it straight to the battery to see if it spins? Can i test the wires with an autometer thing? and if so which wires and how? I have never used one before. i can look up how. but i really am new to the whole electronics side of things.

Really sorry for a Newbie thread. i am just really stuck with this car at the moment and it is sitting going to waste :( any tips of any kind would really help or know problems. i hope im not wasting your time with this thread with a tiny problem but i really am stuck.

thank you.

I gather you haven't got a repair manual. Here are some electrical system checks:

1. If you have an automatic gearbox, check the neutral safety switch as it could be faulty
2. Remove the starter motor & check if it works using some jumper leads.
If you can turn the engine over by hand, then the ring gear is not locked to the starter drive gear
3. A fusible link could be blown. This is connected to the +ve side of the battery and is a bit thicker
than the other wires. You need to find the cause before installing a new one.
4. Check your earth to the motor. Sometimes corrosion can be the cause.

Could be the coil, had this issue with the wagon. Coil got too hot, wouldn't work, cooled down and all ok. Now mounted off the AC compressor mount.

I had the same problem in my Na fairlane. I swapped the coil mounted it between the airbox and headlight never had the problem again.

are you saying it won't crank or wont fire ?

disconnect small push on wire at starter and bridge starter terminal to power cable(heavy cable at starter) should turn over if not....
does it turn over by hand ?

battery-cables or starter -was new battery charged in the first place?

multimeter on 20 volt dc scale -black lead in common - red lead in dc volts of meter
check with black cable connected to metal on engine and red lead connected to large cable on starter approx. 12.5 volts - should hold about (9.5 volts if it does crank)

Hey mate

Unsure if it turns over by hand as the car is stored at a friends but will check when im there. The car doesnt do anything doesnt crank just makes the wurring noise which i think is the fuel pump. then nothing just turn the key and not a thing. and battery was charged a mate charged it at his work before he gave it to me but i will be sure to make sure when i try again that i have a fully charged battery myself. and thank you for the help i will be sure to test with a multimeter as soon as i can.

Thank you

Another thing to check is the neutral safety switch. The 5 speeds do have them. From memory it's the switch on the top. The circuit is completed when car is in neutral, so you can bridge out the circuit if the switch is faulty.

If the starter itself is faulty, get a BA/BF starter, so much better and smaller.
