Am having an overhot problem and wish to test the fan switch. Engine Does not cool down on reduced speed or downhill.
NOT overheating until motorway running and does not show signs of boiling. Needle stops just short of top red block.(Still in normal range ) .Does not seem to affect drive-ability at all.
Cannot hear or see the fan running at any temperature.
Thanks in advance.

The Cooling switch is the ECU.

The Relays are a common point of failure, as are the fans themselves.

Like Pete said - do a self test.

Mine sits right in the bottom of the normal range... Even without a fan running... Sounds to me like not only do you have a problem with the fans (both should be in by the top of normal)... But your cooling system is in need of a service... When was the last flush? When was the last replacement of the radiator? Thermostat? Water pump? Something doesn't seem right...

The sensor that drives the needle is the same sensor that drives the fans... If the needle registers hot then the ECU would be triggering the fans... Same deal... Self test or manually test the relays and fans... (easy enough to do...)

More or less works like this...

Thank you Gentlemen. Your advice is much appreciated.
For information Engine flushed within last three months. New water pump and thermostat within the last month. All new hoses.
However. The previous owner ran the car for a couple of years with no additives whatsoever so possible blockage in sections of the rad. Will replace that straight after I have tested the electrics.
Thanks again for your help.

You can probably get the radiator flow tested before replacing... Might be cleanable... Might be blocked with insects or grass seeds in between the cores too... Might just need a blow out with an air compressor...

Cheers,
Tim

Condensor could be blocked too!

Cheers,
Tim
