Hi all i have a 98 nl fairlane 5.0 l on cold day auto drives fine.
When she warms up she bangs what appears to be 1st but its not, its stuck in 4th and when i turn off it resets then changes fine until you hit the next lights. Can anyone perhaps shed some light on what it may be im not convinced its the box itself but rather something minor. ..

sounds like its time for a box service and to get the codes pulled. its going into limp home mode. many many things can trigger this. you really need to get the error codes pulled so it can be diagnosed correctly.

Could be as simple as the gear position switch on the side of the box. DO a self test first.

i thought limp mode was 3rd, could be wrong but ive had a btr in an ef stuck in 3rd many times, turn the car off and it seemed to work fine again.

You are correct. 3rd with unlocked converter is Limp mode. Often people mistake it as 4th because, in Limp mode they have no way of comparison.
