Hi Everyone..
Need help please,
I have a 5 ltr Ed Futura with a power steering problem,
all of the fluid has leaked out..
wondering if anyone has an image of the power steering of same, from the top ??
there is a hole at the top of my power steering that looks like it used to have a screw in it but Im not sure if this is the case., it has PS fluid all around it .. which I assume is where all the fluid has leaked from, Im female and not a mechanic, so please don't be mean
just need to see a pic so I can tell what should be there please and a solution to fix it if possible please TIA for any help - Cheers

Post up a picture of what you are trying to describe.

I assume that you are talking about the steering rack?

Too hard to tell from that angle if that crack is actually leaking or not.

On the back of the plastic reservoir, the hose going into it is the return line iirc. Clean around it and then run the engine & check for leaks, they can leak there when the hose get's old & hard. The pumps can also leak where the high pressure hose goes into the side.

Im more worried about the hole, (circled in red) looks like it
should have a screw or plug of some sort in it

I don't remember there being any exposed metal on the back of the power steering pump on the EB/ED v8.



A pic of one I did a reco on. Replaced a couple of vanes and fit a new seal kit to it back in about 2012 iirc.

Hi,

Not sure if you have fixed this yet, but:

The leak won't be coming from that area you circled. The plastic cover on the back of the pump has a rubber ring to seal it against the metal housing. 9 out of 10 times this one fails and empties the reservoir. Get a rebuild seal kit on ebay (about 50 bucks all up I think) and replace that rubber ring at least. I have managed to replace the rubber ring whilst the pump is still in the car. Its tight and fiddly, but it will go.

1. remove pressure hose
2. remove nut where pressure hose was screwed into (there will be a spring coming out, so please keep a rag close so you can catch it)
3. the plastic cover should wobble now. You can pull and squeeze it towards the back of the engine bay to pull it off.
4. curse as more oil pours everywhere (cans of rapid degreaser do miracles here)
5. get a little hook, a needle or something small in to remove the rubber ring that sits around the housing
6. dip the new rubber ring in power steering fluid
7. put the new ring on
8. clean the cover so no crap sits in the mating area
9. replace the cover over the back of the pump, please take this step slow and lube the cover with fresh oil to make it slide easy as you do not want to pinch your new rubber seal (keep feeling with your fingers on the bottom whilst you slide it on)
10. once in place, put the spring and nut back on
11. attach the high pressure steering hose back on, but note to clean the thread and put Teflon sealant on
12. fill the reservoir and start the car. If it doesn't seal, you will notice quite quickly!

The covers rarely crack. If it has, something must have hit it hard.

If you decide on getting a second hand pump (that doesn't make noise!), maybe run or get a seal kit run through it. You will most likely have this issue again soon if you don't. These pumps are prone to leak at the back, especially if someone had one lying around dry for a few months.
