I have a 2001 AU 6 cyl auto ute.
Can someone please help me and explain:-

What is a BBM (Broad Band Manifold)? Is it the unusual/unique intake manifold on these engines?

What does a BBM solenoid do?

What effect does it not working properly have on a running engine?

What effect would it not being connected have?

Thanks for any assistance. :D

A) BBM is the intake manifold. It gives Long runners or Short runners on the intake length.

What does a BBM solenoid do?

A) It switches the butterflys in the BBM between short and long runners.

What effect does it not working properly have on a running engine?

A) It will be on short runners default setting (Low Vac), which will give good torque at wide open throttle but not great for low RPM. When the vacuum is high at low RPM it activates the solenoid which closes the butterflies causing it to run through the long runners giving improved torque.

What effect would it not being connected have?

[b]A) See above.

Thanks for any assistance. :D

Thanks a lot for explaining that. :D

So the fact that as it appears that the guy who owned the car before had been driving forever with this device disconnected the amount of torque would have been affected?
I was hoping that with this disconnected it might be causing the intermittent engine cut-outs whilst driving ay a steady speed.
This vehicle has been regularly serviced since new and despite the fuel pump, plugs, leads and coil being replaced it still has this cut-out problem.

Does the cutting out appear to be worse when you accelerate?

Fuel filter might be blocked causing low fuel pressure at the injectors. Maybe injectors might be blocked, have you run injector cleaner through it before?

Sounds like a fuel issue if your plugs, leads and coil being replaced.

Thanks for your input. :)

No, it doesn't cut out on acceleration, it's when you're just cruising at a steady speed.

No, it has a new fuel filter and the injectors have been checked and are good.

One other point is that when it cuts out it takes several attempts to start it again. When it does start it runs fine however that is until it decides to cut out again. :(

Sounds electrical to me... maybe try another ECU or the MAP sensor could be on its way out...
I'm not too familiar with the AU utes but it might be a starting point for you...
