EF/EL T5 shifter will sit approx 40mm closer to the dash than the AU.

is there a way to move the shifter back at all? to its normal spot?

That is the normal spot for an E series T5. E Series T5 is shorter than the AU T5 (tailshaft is also shorter for the AU Manual). E series Bellhousing will fit the AU Block but 4 of the lower bolts don't line up.

If you want it in the correct spot for the AU, use the AU Box and bellhousing.
