Hi guys. Ive got the engine out of my xr6 and i need to change the timing chain. My question is, is it necessary to take the head off? or is it possible to remove and replace the timing chain cover without doing so?

You can remove the timing cover without taking the head off. The sump can be loosed to make it easier to remove. That being said, most people would replace the sump gasket and rear seal while the engine is out.

Why do you need to change the timing chain ?

I had the engine out as I needed to replace sump gasket and weld up the clutch hole on the firewall, when I dropped the sump, I found a chain guide in the bottom. So may as well do the chain.

Making lot of work for yourself. The chains are usually bullet proof - the guide I assume is the lower one on the timing cover. Provided it's okay, refit it to the cover and put the sump on.

As mentioned, you'd be better replacing the rear main seal, and possibly the rear welch plug.

anyone? I've got the engine out of the car. Dropped the sump. I've released the tension and got the timing cover loose but can't get it off.

Did you pull the tensioner completely out? Also the top guide bolt removed?
