Advice needed.

I am wanting to convert my 2006 BF XL utility, 4 speed auto, from factory LPG to petrol. The reason being I do a fair bit of traveling out west and LPG is getting harder to get in regional towns and I'm not wanting to spend quite few thousand dollars on extra gas cylinders and losing room in the back of my utility. I have a damaged but still running 2009 FG cab/chassis (petrol) that I have picked up for a song, less tray, diff and transmission.

Since being a bit of an old coot and an ex-military mechanic (retired) I do know one end of a spanner from the other but this new technology can sometimes do my head in. Thus asking for some advice.

Swapping over the fuel tanks and lines are pretty much a given. Will the engine swap over be a simple bolt out bolt in operation or is there differences in the mounting up of the FG engine? Will the PCM and the compete engine and engine bay wiring harness have to be changed as well and is it a simple plug and play operation? Is the fuel tank wiring harness for the fuel pump and fuel sender unit going to be a simple plug and play operation? Am I going to have to swap over the front x-members to fit the FG engine? Any advice or step process would be gratefully appreciated.

Cheers.

My understanding is you will have to change over all the wiring etc including the PCM/ICC etc to make it plug & play.

everything else ... not sure

FG stuff electronically is likely not compatible with BF, They did have different part numbers on the PCM's and had different clusters, and body modules

To do it with BF stuff i think i have listed everything that would require changing.

PCM/ECU will require changing, Manifold will require changing Engine wire loom will need changing, Lhs engin bay loom will need changing as will the left hand side of the "H" loom under the carpet.

You will then need to make up/ find some fuel lines and a fuel tank to mount in there.

cluster will work all fine but yor fuel level will be out

Lots of work

to do it with FG you would probably need to do the entire wiring and dash of the car.

Might be easier to just swap or trade it for a BF or FG petrol model. unless you really want to spend the $$ or love the car

well i have just returned from a car (ute) buying runaround...found out the other day that lpg...96 cents metro...if you can find it...to well over $1.40 plus in some country towns...again if you can find it...my country town had 4 servos with lpg...now zip......so i thought i gotta trade up/down....whatever...seems no dealer wants to trade...07 bf rtv cab/chassis on ded gas...or is that dead gas...lol...............so i will have to look into converting to unleaded...........my plans are
leave the original block...why pull that out
either fit unleaded head or have egas head machined to take the fuel rail
remove scuba tanks
fit plastic petrol tank
im not too cluey on the computer side...help appreciated....
oh dealers told me they wont trade ded lpg cars as one day you wont get fuel...at nearly a dollar who wants the crap.....thanks guys...im in metro perth

Over here on the east coast it isn't that bad yet as I got a good trade in value for mine. But enough of that.
Doing the conversion is quite a big job as I considered doing it myself but ruled it out is I couldn't be without a vehicle for an extended period of time.
Other than the obvious changes on the engine you'll need the engine wiring harness, complete fuel line assembly, emission control system, compete fuel tank and mounting hardware, fuel tank wiring harness. The ECU will have to be unlocked to have fuel injection operation or swap out the ECU and the one thing I'm not sure the dedicated LPG vehicles have as a redundant system is the fuel cut off switch and wiring. The fuel cut off switch is located behind the passenger left kick panel and is supposed to active in case of an accident to cut off the fuel pump. If the LPG vehicles don't have it you have to fit it as well. You might end up needing the complete wiring harness or at least the wiring harness for that area.
Sorry I can't be much more help than that. Good luck with it all if you still decide to go ahead.

I know its more than 12 months later. BUT, I love my RTV lpg and It really annoys more that because of the govt lpg is being phased out. I am planning a trip through SA in Nov with a look at the Oodnadatta track. I have an extra tank on mine with a range of about 1100km but I am still planning via lpg servos.
My 2cents

i run my AU as a lpg only vehicle which i love & yes due to servos downgrading to petrol/diesel only or only the one lpg outlet and more & more people switching back to back to petrol.......

eventually we will most likely be running electric........ or pushbikes
