I just tightened one of the Mounting Cap nuts to prescribed torque of 80Nm, damn bolt thread snapped.
In 80 Nm correct or is it too much? Will this cause any instability issues when I drive? Regards Peter |

The bolts coming through the inner guard at the top, underneath is the coil spring with Shock Absorber in the middle.

This is what I read in Gregory's No 274 Falcon 1998-2002 Chapter 13 Steering Gear Mounting nuts 80Nm Suspension Unit Upper mounting bolts 35Nm Oops, I think it should have been 35Nm. Hopefully there is a wrecker nearby that may have one. I hope its not a big job to replace it. |

I hope its not a big job to replace it. haha . . . ...... yeah the max wasn't easy peasy to read either! ... won't be hard . . but you will need a spring compressor [x2] so you can move spring out of the way. |

Yeah, they don't make the reading of the book very clear.
2 Spring compressors, hmmm, I had a lot of drama with the other spring compressors I had, the mongrels kept slipping and never could get them to work properly so I put them in the bin ages ago. Too many spring compressor variants around, choosing one that works good is the lottery ticket. |

Went to Beenleigh Wreckers earlier today to see if I can get those mounting pads. Bloke reckons they are struts and part of the shock absorber and those struts have bearings.
I disagreed with the bloke as I've never seen bearings in that mount, then again, I did not pull them apart in the past. He never had any AU's. Even if he did have he said I needed to purchase the spring, shocky and the struts as one unit. No guarantee of any leaks. Even if he did have any it would be about $180.00. Stuff that. I might have to buy one including postage costs from you if its cheap enough . I'll try another 2 wreckers and see what they can come up with. |

Managed to get a complete unit from Capalaba Wreckers, from an AUIII, original red Monroe gas for $35.00.
Bump stop was degraded so purchased a new bump stop. Hopefully the shock from the AUIII is still in good condition. As soon as I can get that bump stop placed on. It might be easier to swap the entire unit over, then try to get the other fixed whilst out of the car. Can always weld a new stud / bolt on the snapped one, hey! |

Ended up getting a suspension place to compress the spring to replace bump stop and respring for $20.00. Had a mongrel time removing the damaged strut assembly from vehicle having no crow bar to level pressure. I was not going to undo lower ball joint, pain in the butt to retention without ramps.
Replacement spring is original Monroe, 9 coils and further apart. The one I removed has King Springs. 11 coils and less further apart. Going to get spring compressed and remove mounting cap, get 3 new high tensile bolts, cut to size and weld them using MIG. At least I'll have a near new one in case the replacement goes bung. Thanks for the help. |

So am I, thanks to all. Just one question though. I want to repair the damaged one. I have purchased 3 bolts with the same thread type, the bolt head has 8.8 stamped on it, (mostly used in construction) I will need to make the thread longer and weld the bolts from underneath using the existing stud location. The bolts are not hardened steel. Question is, would those construction bolts be equivalent to the bolts used in the automotive industry? Reason I ask is twofold. Firstly, I can't find a store that sells automotive bolts (wreckers would be no good for this one) , secondly, will they withstand / take the pressure / load? Cheers |

I would say that you need a grade 8 bolt. I can't tell you if what you have would be the same?
If you were in NSW I could tell you where to buy bolts but don't know in QLD. Sorry Attachment: grades.png
