Am I right in that a screamer pipe is like a small exhaust pipe with no mufflers that the exhaust gases that have been sent through the wastegate are sent down instead of being plumed into the usuall exhaust pipe?
now my main question are these on external wastegates only? i presume internal wastegates are inbuild into the unit and so can't be plumed into a screamer? |

You can fit a screamer onto a turbo with internal wastegate. You have to weld a lip onto the dump pipe. This lip separates the wastegate exhaust from the turbo exhaust. From there you split the dump pipe at the lip into 2 paths. One being the actual dump pipe and the other being a short section of 2 inch pipe. This short section is the screamer and bends slightly away from the dump pipe. You can make it longer so it dumps off to the side but its easilly picked by the authorities and the charge (if you get caught) is simillar to driving with no exhaust system, Vehicle too loud and no cat fitted. On the strip its woth it but on the street you'll get raped by the pigs if they catch you. Alternatively you could have a removeable pice of pipe wich, when fitted can dump back into the dump pipe and when you pull it off then you have a screamer. Just remember to keep the pipe on when you drive on the street.

A nother idea is to purchase a mr gasket cut out valve, it fits on the exhaust and is made up of a y setcion of pipe and an interal valve that is controlled by a choke cable, hook that sucker up and u can choose to run 2 different echaust setups or just 1 and a dumpy pipe, all controlable from inside the cab

But once the pigs see an open pipe hooked up to the wastegate your gone. Regardless of wether there is a valve in there which can dump back in the exhaust. The issue is more for emissions rather than noise because if your driving under boost then you won't hear a thing. Once you hit boost and the wastegate opens then its like you've chopped your zorst off at the headers.

you can make screamer pipes legal.. all you have to do is put a small cat converter on it. noise is no problem as the gate is closed when doing a DB test on the car |

yea, but you would have to run the pipe all the way to the rear of the car.... no exhaust allowed to exit before the last seam in the body

I used a screamer pipe on the ED for a few weeks, it was so stupidly loud I ended up stuffing it with steel wool... made it really quiet but the wool kept working its way out... plus the engineer would never have passed it

that depends on the type seam used. a fully welded seam you can have the exhaust exit befor it so long as there are no partly welded seams. BMW actualy used that method with one of there factory turbo cars |

Doors are counted as seams though, so it needs to make it to the diff at least?

and screamer pipes dont really make much difference in performance anyway... not worth doing, just plumb it into the exhaust pipe. if you want to make the most of it, run it down past the first and second bend and into the main pipe at a smooth 45deg angle

yes, in a sedan it has to run over the axle

yea, exactly, it was said about not finishing before any seams in the body panels, therefore, it has to exit rear of the car
