ive heard superchargers are easier to install than turbos...

ive read the DIY turbo install, but just wondering if someone could explain to me the basic installation process thats behind installing a s/c, might be looking at getting one when my tax refund comes in...heh

OK i assume we are talking centrifugal blower - i.e. vortech style.

Well the main reason they are so easy is that you will most likely end up ordering a kit from CAPA. These things come with EVERYTHING - right down to the very last cable tie. Also comes with a big book that takes you step by step through the install.

There's something disturbingly sweet about getting a huge box of bits delivered and knowing that's all you'll need (apart from tools, foul language and patience).

Also consider that with a turbo, you're doing some pretty funky things to the exhaust side of things - a supercharger all you are doing is fitting an air pump into the intake side....

Toughest part of blower install is getting the pulleys all lined up nice and straight. And tapping an oil return line if the blower of choice requires it. No welding, no exhaust/dump pipe/intake manifold fabrication etc etc.

Wow - i completely avoided the question there.

OK - basic process for a CAPA job - rip out the airbox and cut a big hole in the inner guard of the engine bay. Run the intake piping through the hole and mount up a pod filter inside the bumper.

Rig up the oil feed/return if required.

Bolt the supercharger to the bracket and bolt the bracket onto the engine. Play around with the belts. Add/remove washers to get everything lined up.

Construct the intake tubing.

Re-jig the PCV system to be boost-friendly. Fit water injection kit if required.

Plug in the chip.

Start the motor and go back to the drawing board after realising belts are going walkabout off pulleys :) (real trial and error stuff involved here).

Take it to the dyno.

Go to CBC and buy spare belts :)

Seeign you have a 6cyl, a turbo won't be about the same difficulty. V8's are difficult to do turbos on, but 6cyl are pretty straight forward. Talk with 6BOOST or Snort performance about kits, but remember they aren't cheap. Once you add aftermarket computers, tuning time, labour etc on to the kit prices you will need a pretty big tax refund to cover it :)

well actually u could do it, but it would have to sit on a custom intake manifold. be a real pain in the a** i reckon

EDIT: The car that package is on was in street machine not long ago, on an EL XR6 with 2 spd powerglide, runs 10's. Insane car, alot of custom work under the bonnet.

Make sure the valve cover breather is re-routed to before the blower/turbo otherwise the boost will pressurise the crankcase. Also a good idea to add additional crankcase vents if you plan on running big boost or have a older bottom end, and think of adding an oil catch can to the pcv line, and tot he vent lines if you are recirculating it back into tthe air intake (which you should for pullution and legal reasons).
