When you bought ther alternator, Had it been tested prior to being sold?
Take it to a sparky and see what they say when they test it and if it proves to be faulty then take it back and see if you can get your money back or get it changed for another one that has been tested.

so the new alternator is in, the wires are hooked up, and the car is running when you test it? and the multimeter across the battery is showing 12volts?

shouldn't it be showing 13.8 volts?

Could be the voltage regulator on the back of the 'new' Alternator is faulty not the whole Alternator, an Auto Elec is you best bet to sort this out.

if the light doesnt come on before you start the engine, it tells me that either the bulb has blown or the warning light wire isnt connected, either way, the alternator isnt charging and you may be doing damage to the alternator

in that case, as i said before, is the warning light wire connected?

theres only 2 reasons it wont come on just before u start it

1: the bulb has blown
2: the warning light wire isnt connected

i susect the alternator is f**k, my old one is like that, would sit happy at 12.5v at any revs, light would be out but if i put any load on it at night, you could see it glowing (load=500w worth of high beam and 50w of brakes) chucked in another alt and it went fine, and i know it wasnt the regulator cos i'm using it in the new alternator

the alternator has a light and a sense in the 2-pin plug, the sense must be getting battery voltage, otherwise it won't charge.
what is the voltage if you measure it from the +pos terminal on the alt and the case of the alternator?
