Any mechanics reading, I'm after some help.

My father in law has a VK 3.3 litre black motor with the E.S.T. If the dizzy has been moved is there a procedure to set a base timing figure? Moving the dizzy back and forth seems to make no difference with the timing light til you go too bloody far then it stalls. The E.S.T. light on the dash isn't staying on so the system is okay.

The car has a bad miss fire and I want to make sure all ignition is set right etc, but I suspect cylinder 5 has a burnt valve or blown gasket going by spark plug and comp test.

Just want to get it to run okay for a bit longer.

Hang on, let me insure it first. ;)

If someone knows where that plug is that would be awesome.

at least you got a sense of humor..

normally the electronic spark control plug is located near the brake booster..

they very similar to the xf ones from memory

You got it. Electronic Spark Timing. Uses a crank angle sensor, engine temp, rpm, manifold vacuum, air cond status, ummm... position of the moon etc to vary the timing.

Thought about looking at a Holden forum, but then I may need to join. I can't bring myself to do that ;)

I noticed a plug swinging in the breeze near the booster while I was working on it today, might be the one. I have no idea what the ones on an XF look like :( Never timed an XF.

I'm no expert but my son has a VK and the timing is triggered by a crank sensor in the top of the bell housing.
As long as the rotor is pointing somewhere near the pole pieces in the dizzy then it doesn't matter if the dizzy is a bit out.
If it is the dizzy with the reluctor then the timing is adjusted by rotating the dizzy.
Check to see that you haven't got a cracked a spark plug, bad leads or a crook cap etc.

yeah but to do the timeing in the first place one needs to put the EST into timeing mode so to speak, the dizzy only allows the adjustment
