have a EL fairmont thats going into limp mode (3rd) as soon as D,3,2 or 1 is selected. have tested the TPS and the inhibitor switch, checked all plugs, connections and everything is ok. Ran the diognostic and found that soleniod 1 has faulted.
At work we have a complete transmission but the soleniod that is missing doesnt have a code on the body eg:S1. all that i can see is DAMPER. can anyone tell me if this is the common soleniod to replace or is the S5 soleniod that ive heard so many problems about and is it somewhere else on the valve body. will do another diagnostic tomorrow to double check the fault code.
tnx if anyone can help.

Yeah its usually the variable pressure solenoid that goes (s5) .

Hrrrmmm, i thought the "valve body" had the solednoid number stamped on there.... sounds like it may be a job for the factory workshop manual or a tranny expert.

luck enough at work i found a reject transmission from ford, opened it up and the damper soleniod is missing im thinking its S5 as there are no markings for S5 on the body. S1 the fault that i have is the shift soleniod which makes sence as its not shifting. will replace S1 in the morning and let you all know how it goes. its a very simple job, drop the sump pan, remove filter (1 clip) remove seleniod plug and i torx srew, replace, refit and re fill fluid.

replaced soleniod 1 (shift) today, all fixed and gears changing better than ever. was quoted $190 to replace part plus service (new filter, fluid and pan gasket) $90. got the soleniod for nothing and fluid, filter and gasket was $50. so saved heaps and the job only took about 2 hrs.
