Damn. You are all right. They are actually gray - although slightly on the greener / blue side of gray than the red or orange side of gray.

You DON'T SMOKE SILVER FERNS mate! You smoke green ones.

Man - How convinced are you about doing the AU rocker cover black?

Is the family back Benj?

There's no one saying anything like "hey, for f**k slow down..." or "you're the best, fastest and most fabulous guy ever..." or "you do more in a day than I do in fifteen lifetimes..." or "are you on crystal meth?.."

As usual, I'd love to be you. Although never having met the family, they seem 100% more willing and supportive on the Ford front than mine. Therefore, for that reason alone, wish I was you. There's other reasons too, of course. Starting at the top with "you're not colour blind" and working all the way down to "being a personable chap that has the likes of Snap popping around to do what Snaps do"...

Maybe I'll think different once the drugs wear off......

Mate, I was laughing all the way. CAPS (if not used throughout a whole sentence) ain't really SHOUTING where I'm from. It's more STRONG EMPHASIS.

I don't have a weird sense of humour. YOU TAKE THAT BACK. Back I say. Woooaaahh... Stop there now. Not that far back...

Bugger.

AHHH of course, gas from the land of IMPCO.

Green heads and rockers are on AU LPG engines.

BenJ you are doing a marvelous job with this wagon.

The speed of progress is just awesome. 7 Y/O son has been getting crappy at me not spending enough time with him. He was happy helping with nuts and bolts on doors etc but once under the car/eningine it was too dangerous for him to be helping. I guess now the engine is in we can do more jobs together. I must upload the pictures and find the original thread I had on my rebuilding.

I used to hang around the garage with the stock-car champion over the road when i was a wee lad.

I guess that's where it all started. The problem with the kids helping everything takes 4 times as long.

Well then fellas, I must be one of the lucky ones, as my son Luke, likes to help me work on the car. It is great to have company and an extra pair of hands or feet, especially when you are under the car with the wrong size ring spanner.

Anyone for RUST?

For those of you who have not delved into the world of metal oxidisation, a small word of warning. Do not poke around with a screwdriver without being prepared.

Luke and I headed down to see the marvelous, the fabulous, the extremely talented, Paulc - thanks again mate!!!!

The following is a small picture tutorial regarding RUST.

Left hand rear wheel arch, and dent.
Image

After poking with a screwdriver, and a being attacked with a grinder and a dremel, it looked like this. The dent has also been pulled out with the assistance of a drill, and a small dent puller.
Image

Then the rust convertor was applied.
Image

After that had done its work, fibreglass bog filler is liberally spread around.
Image

It is sanded to shape, then a skim layer of bog is applied and sanded back.
Image

The next stages are for me to sand some more with wet and dry, then apply some primer so it is protected until next week when we tackle this.
Image

Some things just cannot be bogged up.

We went out to see Racedirector who is stripping his EL Wagon. As it is going to be scrapped, RD kindly donated the dog legs which are in great condition. Thanks RD!!

Paulc also did the right side. Some progress shots.
Image

Image
It also needs a replacement dog leg.
Image

Paulc had also made some additional progress on the bonnet, and has applied fibreglass bog along the weld joins. I sat the bonnet vents in to ensure there was adequate clearance underneath.

All in all, a very productive day.

And my thanks also go out to MrsC for the great lunch.

BenJ

Geeze mate when you said you needed to get rid of some rust I had no idea you had a serious rust problem like that in the mighty wagon, Looks like you have it all under control though.

The bonnet looks like its come another step forward too.

very impressed with Paulc's work it gives me ideas for my lane when it becomes a fulltime project car after i get my ute, I think the X series bonnet vents look better than the E series ones anyway!

Cant wait to see the bonnet on the wagon.

Cheers

Josh

That rust in front of wheel rear wheel arch is normal in wagons. I have done exactly the same repair to my right, and the left has been replaced from petrol cap to back door sill... (Obviously I could have just done the rusty patches if it wasn't for Asian driver influence)...

Whatever.

BENJ - You may have read my rantings before, but you should remove the plastic bits above the rusty area and all the trim at bottom of rear side window above filler cap. Note how all the original rubber seals have perished to nothing.

Another way of checking is to take the boot lining out so you can see the inside of the wheel arch from the boot and put the hose on the window. Watch the water run in!

Another thing is if you take out the roof lining and pour rust converter into the frame above doors, you'll be amazed where it comes out and gets to. I found water getting in ABOVE the doors where there is a 0.5mm gap in a seam! Use a small mirror with roof lining removed and check for rust in the creases about four inches forward of the pillar behind rear seat passengers... If there's no rust staining (or, judging by the state of your wheel arch it could be flaking and bubbling by now) I'll eat my hat or something else unpleasant.

I guess you old box car lovers don't have the rubber strip that runs the whole way along outer door sills from front guard to rear wheel arch? These things seem to stop the sill rust a little.

Mind you, you're miles away from the ocean now - where did the car spend most of its life?

I know, you've seen it before....Image
But, others may not of....Image
