Apart from the electrical and LPG issues, I have been having fun diagnosing a loud HUM from the front of the car.
I had thought it was tire noise, as the HUM became noticable after I fitted the new wheel and tire combo. I tried rotating the tires, but the HUM remained constant. I applied a bit of lateral thought, and realised the HUM was consistant regardless of road surface or weather. It still HUMMED if the road was wet. This, to me eliminated tire noise as the issue. It had to be Wheel Bearing related. I had fitted new wheel bearing along with the new brake rotors just before christmas. I assumed that they should be fine, but could need adjusting. During the week I checked them and found them both to be a little loose so adjusted them to be a bit firmer. The HUM was still there. Today, I decided to inspect the bearings. I found that the large inner bearing had what appeared to be metal flakes on the outside edge of the cage. I washed it out in some petrol, and this is what was left behind.  Not good at all. I repacked the bearing with fresh grease to get me through to pay day, and will buy new bearings during the week. I only hope that the outer cone in the rotor is ok, as I hate punching them out and back in again. I would need to borrow a brass drift. Any one got one handy? Cheers BenJ

Froudey, no I only did the right side.
I will replace them all next week, and I didn't see any point in wasting good grease. BenJ

Hey - My left wheel bearing only last four months, but it didn't look like a hand grenade - it was just rusty as hell (and yes, I did have to take the cup out the rotor.........) Glad you found the hum before the hum turned into a "oh bugger, I was sure I should have made it around that corner............"
Much prefer the wheel bearing problem to what I've just done though............................................ Anyone need advice on how to turn a nice 6 into a lumpy 4? I'm the man. |

Check your inner seals - if there's grease weeping onto the steering knuckle, or the grease looks like it's had water ingress at the inner bearing, change them along with the bearing.
Rusty rollers will destroy themselves fairly quickly.

Thanks guys for the tips.
I had installed new seals along with the bearings. And there really wasn't grease all over the upright either. I don't think I have a socket quite that large, and recall using a brass drift to puch the cones out of my old Valiant rotors years ago. What I do remember is that you need to use a drift made from stuff softer than the bearing cone. I suspect the bearings may be faulty, but I don't see how I can prove that. Oh well, new bearings this week. BenJ

I had a similar problem. I found the seal face of the spindle was pitted which damaged the seal. I polished it like crazy. seemed to be ok afterwards.

Although it is yet to be proven if it is "okay" or not and if it is keeping in water or keeping it out... Damn rusty bearing! |

I am unfamiliar with Impco gas systems but I believe your converter is blocked or may have a split diaphragm which is why you have a gas shortage. I had a bad gas fill last year and the gas was stuffed and hardly ran at all. I fitted a different converter (regulator) and it runs fantastic now. I had a BRC (yuk)and now an OMVL and the OMVL is massively better at cold running. It never stalls anymore! The car was plagued by needing petrol warm ups ever since I bought it 9 years ago. I had poor gas running and cold stalling for 8 years before I swapped it out last August.

I installed the XR Fuel Pressure Regulator on Sunday, and the Wagon is now going better than it ever has. In combination with the EL Ghia ECU, it really has some get up and go. Sounds good too. Very tempting do ditch it, very tempting. BenJ
