well its that time again. time for me to start a new project lol

it was the EB wagon but when the timing chain snapped mid house move i sat down and had a serious think about it. yes it has space, but its also going to cost a bit to get a RWC and also alot more on fuel over a 4cyl car...

soo... i thought why not strip the front end of the bushes i need for the fairlane and sell the rest off on ebay...

on to the new projects, i searched ebay for a while and a pair of KB lasers (84) came up in caboolture shire... so i called the number on the windscreen and found out they were 2k's up the road, i went and viewed them, i offered the guy the 500 bucks he was chasing but he said someone had bid on it for 99 cents and id have to bid to get them... so in the end i got the both for a pricely sum of $127.50... his loss...

i picked them up last monday and had the fun task of seeing what i had to deal with... a bit of rust here and there. mostly surface rust but #1 has some bad roof rust.

here is the lowdown...
#1:
84 KB Laser Ghia
1.5L
5speed manual
twin carbies
twin carb cam (alot of people miss this and loose power)
extractors
2" exhaust
tinted windows
AIRCON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Towbar
Rear window visor

#2
84 KB Laser Ghia
1.5L (blown head gasket)
5speed manual
single carb (stock)
AIRCON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

#1 will be used as a word vehicle and #2 will be rebuild for my brothers to use UNLESS the roof rust in #1 is beyond safe repair then #2 will donate its shell.

i have allready pulled the head off #2 laser and it looks pretty damn good for 3xx,xxxk's. VRS kit will be on its way shortly

laser 2

the 2nd needs alot more work done to it but my main focus is the first.

plans for the first:
install the pods to the front doors to house the 6" and 4" speakers, mount the 8" sub and box behind the front seats, fabricate a box for the rear to house all my work products, general tune up of the motor, and most importantly a respray in a custom white with green pearl. mainly because it needs a respray once the rust is gone and 2ndly because we can do it ourselves for less them 150 bucks.

more to come as work progress's.

Nice project dude!! Its not everyday you see a guy making a project out of KB Laser, good choice i reckon especially when you take into consideration how much gas they use. Lol at the guy losing out on the $500 you offered him. Bet he's kicking himself now

Laser #1 sounds pretty good to me, twin carb goodness ftw , plus its already got extractors and exhaust so thats a very good start

I'll be watching to see how this transforms

they guy isnt too happy about missing out on money but his wife is p****d!! haha. he had the chance.

i won the VRS kit on ebay last night for a whole 30 bucks haha so fun will begin when it arrives

Huggie, I think telstar mags are 5 stud, but depending on the model I could be wrong.

can i ask why you dont use your Lane' for a daily?

seems pointless to "do up" or spend money on a POS laser when it could be going towards your pride and joy

Good thing you have a paddock to store all of those cars mate
Nice pick up. I made a similar score with the NA fairlane.......offered the guy $750 but wanted to go through ebay........end up getting it for $400
Pity about the rust though.........my wife had a laser and it was full of rust. I bodgied it up and end up trading it in for a 351 XD wagon :P
Good luck with the build mate.....will be interesting to see how they turn out.
Cheers,
Mick

as XFWAGIN said, they are cheap to buy and on fuel... and well you may think they are a POS i think they are great.

my fairlane needs new bushes and shocks and chews through fuel... so why would i waste soo much of my hard earned cash on fuel when i can spend it on more better things.

well a lil update, today i stripped all the rust areas back. shouldnt be too hard to fix. i have also removed all the front paneling. im going to buy a sand blasting kit to make life a lil easier lol.

on other news i just bought another NC Fairlane same colour as mine on ebay for 150 bucks :D

that should get here later on in the week

ok the POS comment was a bit harsh, but if your falcon is chewing fuel, you should find out why and fix it

i'd say the difference in fuel consumption between a well maintained injected falcon, and a 25 year old carbied laser would be $10 max per week..... so thats a saving of $500 a year

but then your paying rego on this laser too.... which is $400-500 per year in QLD (ripoff) plus any money & time you spend maintaining the thing, so ends up costing the same?

but anyway, if your doing it up for fun & something to do in your spare time, thats a different story and can understand that so will be interesting to see what you come up with :)

well my first car was a KB laser, same as my 5th lol, so its a lil bit of memories mixed in there.

the laser goes through alot more then 10 a week less then the lane. the lane runs fine, but a heavy car in Brisbane's peak hour traffic all day takes its toll. the laser being manual should help out in the traffic and being smaller helps too.

also im carrying acids and such so id prefere to keep them away from the fairlane.

Hey there Huggie, how manny cars do you need? But seriously that was a cheap deal for 2 lasers they are not my cup of tea but they are good reliable cheap to run cars. what if you painted it the same colour as your lane, you could call it the laserlane, kb-lane or something along those lines. you say you carry acids what sort of work do you do? If its going to be a work car that carries tools ect, do you need the back seat at all? you could rip the back seat out to lighten up the load, by the sounds of the sound system you have planned for it you might need to. With the back seat out you could make some kick a*** custom box out of mdf, turn it into a ute basicly and the hatch back is like the canopy. If there was no back seat and you had a piece a mdf going from the back off the hatch back to the back of the front seats, you would have heaps of room in the back seat foot well for a sub.

Anyways im going to stop there before I talk myself into buying a kb.

how many cars do i need? lots :P

i sold one laser... well its a swap for a 2800rpm stall converter and AU gearbox... worth quite a few hundred bucks. so im on top allready lol

i had an issue with it not starting the other day, so i ripped the head off mine and all is perfect. and recently rebuilt. so we think the flywheel has a snapped tooth... will look into it more if it happens again.

been playing with paint. the rockercover is now black with a green/blue pearl (same pearl i picked up for the lane) and after playing with colour and effects im thinking of spraying the car black with the pearl. ill throw up some pics tonight.

as for audio its only getting a set of 6" JBL 2ways and a set of 4" JL audio 2ways mounted in pods on the front doors, as the fusion allready blew up... woow theres quality for ya, listening to the radio while working on another car then i only had tweeter... it wasnt even loud lol. and for the sub im using the dodgy box i made for the sedan (that fitted under the parcel shelf) and facing the sub forward mounted between the front seats but in the back section.

the rear seat is coming out once it has rego. i am a cleaner. not the best job but 35 bucks a hour its worth it. so i have acids, bleach, really really strong oven cleaners etc. i also have to carry vaccume cleaners mops etc, so a set of roof racks are coming from a mate.

a lil update on progress. its a lil slow as im waiting for parts to arrive.

i scored a VRS kit for a total of 45 bucks posted from ebay (repco want 180)

i also went to buy 2 carbie kits but at 50-89 bucks each i thought id pull the carbies apart first to check out the condition and found they were recently rebuilt, everything is new in both of them.

i had an issue with the laser not starting, felt like a tooth was missing from the flywheel and stopped it from turning over. but we pulled the head off anyways to be sure and the bottom end is perfect aswell as the motor only being fully rebuilt aswell not too long ago. so smiles all round.

i sold the 2nd laser to my housemate ryan.. well i swapped his 2800rpm high stall from his falcon aswell as the AU gearbox for the laser... cost of stally: $350 second hand, cost of BTR: 200+ second hand... so im well ahead.

i have pulled the front panels off to sus out the rust (not much) so that will be painted and put back on pretty soon. then the whole exterior will get painted. after playing with colours and effects im still deciding on a colour. either black with green pearl, or white with the green pearl.

this week should be pretty full on for me, lots of work coming up, aswell as picking up the nc fairlane tomorrow morning. and possibly another KB laser with 43XXXk's (genuine) but depends if i win it on ebay.

i just wish this rain would ease up a little.
