hi all,
Today i finally got around to fixing the rust in the boot, which had been getting worse everyday i left it. i also maneged to track down an ltd garnish in almost as new condition. (by the way i didnt manage to get many photos today.) after i maid shore there was no more rust i put the garnish back on  1990daseries2, You do not have the required permissions to view the files attached to this post. |

Just a little update, after all this rain we recently had. I have notice that the garnish has water in it
 I'm not happy. I took the drain plug out of the boot and it's seemed to fix it. But I'll have to find out where it's leeking in. Otherwise it's all fine.

it will be between the garnish and boot. from factory they have a rubber piece to fill the gap, but over time they shrink, get destroyed or are removed. and then it leaks inside and due to age the seal between the back and the front wont be the best so it will be leaking in there
|

Take the shrunken seal into Clarke rubber & see if they have rubber strip in a similar profile, I plan to do that one day soon. Otherwise, need to get 2 old rubber seals & join them with glue, then trim to size & refit.

Just 5 mins a go I started the ltd up and it was blowing a bit of blue smoke, it was only visable though if you stand back about a couple of meters??? Can anybody give me a pointer on what to do or what it could be, I already know that my head gaskets gone but what does blue smoke mean??

Blue smoke = oil, could be the gasket as previously mentioned letting oil into cylinder, white smoke = water, black smoke = petrol.

Hey guys, since fixing the alternator. I have noticed there is still a bit of dimming of the lights(when I put my foot on the brakes the dash light and headlights slightly dim) I'm thinking it could be the battery leads, as I've heard they corrode. But I'm thinking that I'll just run a new earth straight to the body and mayby another lead from the alternator straight to the battery(should I use an inline fuse for this, if so what amperage?) if people have any info on doing this I'd love to hear it, thanks

welcome to the world of old cars. they all do it. i have an extra power cable from alternator to the battery and the earths and mine still does it. the only way i got rid of mine in the fairlane was fit the EL motor with the 110amp alternator. i think its the instrument cluster earth wires. just not enough.
but if you find a solution let me know

Funny enough I read an article, In an old car Magazine. About some guy who wrote in saying he had the light dimming problem with his ea and the reply was that the earths on the ea's were a bit thin, any way here is what the guy said
Quote: the earth circuit goes through a convoluted part via a couple of plugs, and loses a little bit at each junction. One solution is to carefully solder a thick wire (4mm) directly to the earth track on the dash's printed circuit board and screw the other end onto clean metal on the body.
