The EF's seem to be set up to not go into 4th til around 70kmh, whereas the EL's for instance will happily go to 4th around 60 kmh.
Well you can test this by manually selecting back to 3 2 1 - trans should downshift. You can also hold these gears manually, then select higher gear, and it should upshift.

Is the converter locking as it should ??

Ah, that make sense then and probably the reason I am not feeling 4th at around 55 - 60Kmh. It will hold 1, 2 & 3 and 3, 2, 1 as it should but the 4th change wasn't noticeable judging by the revs. Today during the whole drive I probably only went near 70 a couple of times and at that stage had Pink Floyd on the stereo. I did quizz Rach and she reckoned it was fine however I would much rather experience it myself (if you know what I mean :))

Yeah - converter lockup should be also a slight drop in revs - around 150-200 rpm. IIRC the EF's were like the EL's and could lockup in third as well as 4th. I think pre EF was lockup in 4th only.
When I had the TC lockup manual overide in the wagon when it was an auto, I noticed normally you needed throttle power for it to engage - back off and it would disengage.

Hmmmm, I'll check it out when I drive it again (after I prise the keys off her!). One thing though, is it the converter doing all this or is the ECU coming into play as well. I ask as it is an ED converter, box and wiring on an EF ECU if that makes any difference.

RD, it should not make any difference.

My old box and T/Convertor from my white EB Fairy is currently running around in an EL Wagon with no issues.

+1 as written above, the ECU shift point calibration decides what is happening, depending on inputs of course.

Thanks guys, more learned now :)

I did get a chance to drive it tonight, albeit just down to the shops and back, mostly around 50 to 60 kmh. In economy mode it wouldn't change to 4th but in power mode it would. Power mode @ 60 kmh was 4th gear. Dunno if it supposed to do that but....

Found a weird problem on Rachs Mont, purely by chance. If the car is locked with the key in the lock, it stays locked, but if it is locked with the remote YOU CAN UNLOCK IT BY LIFTING THE OUTER DOOR HANDLE!!!!!

Because it actually lock locks with the key, where the hell do I start to diagnose this problem?????????

Sounds like something is amiss with the actuator rod linkage or the actuator itself

I would think that too but lifting the handle when locked with the key won't unlock it. All the buttons go down, the 3 other doors do not unlock it, just the drivers door. If it was a rod problem surely it wouldn't work with the key either?

from what i remember, and you will see, the actuator mechanism is entirely separate. Its sort of like an afterthought on the designers part...

im sure the problem will be obvious when u take the doortrim off...

if the rod that goes from the actuator to the latch has come off it would cause the problem your orginally reported....although in your second post u seem to be saying something a bitt different

Aha, thanks for that. Only found this out tonight so will be ripping the trim off tomorrow.

Sorry it sounded confusing, I was confusing myself trying to explain it :)

Well, this turned out to be simple. Was chatting with Ben this morning and after chucking round ideas I tried locking the door with the remote while the trim panel was off. Worked fine and I was not able to just lift the handle to unlock it.

What that lead to was the lock knob, it was jamming on it's way down and while it wasn't causing the motor to cycle, it wasn't allowing the full travel of the lock rod. I have put it all back together now and have installed the knob properly - all is well with it buttoned back up again....

The things that are sent to try us....... :)

One other little hiccup I noticed with the EF is that it doesn't change into 4th. Cruising back from the check yesterday I noticed the revs were around the 2200 mark in drive. The changes are so damn smooth that it is hard to figure out what it has got to, wish there was some way of displaying what gear the box is actually in but I know that is impossible.

I know there is nothing wrong with this box as it performed fine when it was in my wagon. Gotta be shift adjustment or something to do with fitting an ED box in an EF. When I put the EL box in my ED I had some issues with gear selection as well with the EL gear shift not working in the ED so this could be something similar.

Well I had to do something today so I stuck the ole EF up on ramps and ripped out the ED transmission wiring that I put in there along with the ED box. Once I installed the original wiring off the old dead EF box all of the gears came back in Economy mode and the changes were smoother. So *something* was different between the ED wiring and the EF wiring, no idea what but who cares, it works now. ED wiring has been trashed as I had to cut it in half to get it out.

RD
